Russian Grand Prix - will Bernie scrap it now?
Discussion
Mixing sports and politics is a very difficult thing. Until the UN Security Council make their usual weak decision and the Russian Government decide that a warm sea mediterranean access port is vital nothing will change. Currently nobody has been shot and it seems likely that at some point the Ukraine will split, peacefully or not. The FIA and CVC wont want to get involved until a month or two before the race and if the sponsors want to go the race will happen. The Ukraine is a mess as a country and Russian wishes to protect its 'rusting' fleet. If you go to the ports there, the ships are in a dreadful state and the harbour isnt much better. The Russian don't want to be sen as weak especially by the US and more to the point China who are eyeing the far east of Russia.
I think the race will happen, this issue will pass and once the Ukraine has a proper government of sorts, with Russian pressure one way or another the international politics will pass. The US doesnt want to get involved, well Obama doesnt even know where Russia is let alone Kiev. The UN will talk, the FIA, FOM, CVC etc will wait and then the race will happen.
