Tribute from his airline - https://www.flightradar24.com/blog/lauda-honors-ni... - pity they couldn't have done a slightly different path, it's almost the A1 Ring/Osterreichring shape.

Was just about to post the same. Classy move from Maranello.
I think Niki will be looking down and saying something rather scathing...

I'm sad about this 70 is no age these days but I guess the damage to his lungs took its toll, he really was made of the right stuff in a different way to Hunt but the same stuff all the same, incredible life and incredible drive to achieve what he did in and out of the sport, the film Rush really made his story come to life.

I got close to him back in 2017 as I was a guest of Merc F1 team at the British GP, I really wanted to speak to him when I was in the garage before Q1 but bottled it in the end, all I got was this crappy side on picture.

Not sure I think it was German TV interviewing him.

Let's be fair.. they have almost half a centuary of F1 participation and influence to squeeze into a weekend, along with the race itself.

Also.. without the TV show there is a wall to wall Lauda love fest.

I do get your point, it's going to be heavy and lots of gushing - in fact it's already started. But I'm going with it. They have no choice, there is just so much worth reminding people of that deserves celebration. I've accepted that this weekend is now for Niki. He deserves that.

I think the famously blunt and unsentimental Lauda would demand that the thread title be changed to 'Lauda dies' -none of this wishy washy 'passing away' .

A quote I encountered on one of my old fart racing forums epitomises Lauda the man. It is 1984 and he's just won the French GP; he walks into the press conference and says ' Today car good; engine good , Lauda good . Any questions ?'

Compare and contrast to the PR guff which we now endure .

Niki Lauda was amongst the most courageous of all; perhaps THE most authentic human being ever to race.
- A real-life legend to the bitter end.

Niki's departure leaves a gigantic hole in the hearts and lives of everyone he met.

I've just remembered that the day one of his planes crashed in Bangkok was described as the worst moment in his life. He moved Heaven and Earth; went to the funerals and was personally involved in the accident investigation looking to absolve blame from his airline.

A man of upmost integrity and moral values as well as working in great detail. Not only applied in his racing career but in business as well. Such a remarkable man.

Yup on FP2 Gunter was saying that he was friends with Niki and the only reason HAAS exists is because of this as Niki opened doors for him to get the team up and running etc. As he put it, Niki could open doors that Gunter could not.....

I remember that once when a journalist began pumping Lauda about how he felt having a disfigured face, he responded by saying he had no problem with it at all. He was the only person in the world who couldn't see it. It was all the other people who had to look at him that had the problem.

I found great strength in this subsequently when I needed facial reconstruction surgery. As it happened, the skill of the surgeons meant I wasn't as deformed as I feared. In fact, my family were adamant that I was better looking than before! But whatever the outcome, Niki helped me through that period of my life.

Except Niki's favourite description of an ill-handling car was "stbox".

It is a measure of Niki that he said James Hunt deserved his title because he was driving better than he was even before his accident.

Thanks for posting this - I would have missed it!

Arnold Schwarzenegger is there. I hadn't even thought about him, but of course - Austrian.

What the fk is wrong with people. All phones out filming trying to get a shot of the celebs as they leave.

The fact that its live streamed says it all to be honest. And I must admit I clicked on it due to curiosity, but after flicking through I couldn't sit and watch that.

The culture these days of having to document EVERYTHING and share it with your peers for 'likes' is toxic. One only hopes that acts of utter disrespect like this become frowned upon for what they are over time and people will think twice about doing it.
