He did nothing on Sunday that deserved a podium and points unless you believe 2 laps behind a safety car with no overtaking is a race.
The fact that he did nothing on Sunday is not his fault though is it? I think that even if the race had gone ahead we would have seen him pull something special out of the bag, it may well not have been a podium, but given his speed in qualifying, had the race gone ahead in similar conditions I think it may have been epic. The FIA caused the race to be a farce, not the drivers. The drivers are perfectly able to celebrate their earned results in my book. (George, like the other drivers, earned his position on Saturday). Had the FIA said race cancelled and yesterdays positions count for half points would the drivers be less pleased? Williams, as a team, have been off the pace for so long that it any points paying position must seem like a gift from the racing Gods so I can easily understand the level of celebration from George and the team.
Some people just cannot be satisfied. George celebrating a podium in a Williams, bah how dare he look anything other than miserable. Lewis saying fans should be refunded, bah, how dare a multi millionaire driver not refund each and every spectator personally and include a hand written apology too.

I feel sorry for Alfa and Haas not being gifted points and podiums by the FIA
They had the opportunity - Williams realised that there was a really good chance of qualifying well and did the best they could with what they had, in the full knowledge that they stood a good chance of hanging on to some of that Saturday gains if Sunday conditions were poor.I can't believe that they ever thought George would end up keeping 2nd place, but there was every chance of overtaking being even harder than usual, or a shortened race. OK, not as shortened as it eventually became - they didn't anticipate that - but a race stopped at 30 laps? Some red flags to clear the inevitable carnage? Black flag if they couldn't sort the track or conditions in the time available?
All of these were entirely possible and were foreseen by Williams. They clearly have a very slow car, but took advantage of the appalling conditions to put themselves in a position to gain, should anything strange happen, hence both of their drivers scoring points.
Alfa and Haas simply didn't think about the possibilities and play to their strengths, though admittedly they have a crop of particularly useless drivers.

Reminds me a little of Hill in the Arrows at Hungary in '96 (IIRC).

Especially following his comment after qualifying regarding no points for Saturday, Williams as a team had almost perfect strategy and they were rewarded after all. Good to see the honours spread around more.
Interesting quali lap analysis by Jolyon Palmer on the F1 YT channel.
Russell definitely took some risks on the kerbs in the wet. It all worked out but could easily have gone wrong. Video title is a bit hyperbolic though

Well it probably would be - Jolyon never achieved much in the world of F1 did he? :wker:Russell definitely took some risks on the kerbs in the wet. It all worked out but could easily have gone wrong. Video title is a bit hyperbolic though

Using a different line from others is something Hamilton has been known for for years?

Yep. 18 other drivers had the opportunity to do the same but they didn't. To appallingly misquote Alan Partridge, Russel was the 2nd best driver at the Belgian Grand Prix.
Reminds me a little of Hill in the Arrows at Hungary in '96 (IIRC).
Giancarlo Fisichella, Force India, Belgium 2009. Nowhere all year, no points then pole position and 2nd in the race.Reminds me a little of Hill in the Arrows at Hungary in '96 (IIRC).

Did Horner just basically say to Sky F1 that Russel was leaving Williams? He is going on about Albon getting a seat at Williams....
I read about Albon / Williams rumour a few days ago.( Thought Nyck de Vries was in the frame for Williams & Alfa’s 2nd Seat)

Yes rumours indeed but Horner was saying that he has a change for that seat and he hopes Merc won't block it etc and even that there have been a number of calls etc made about it with the team.. So nailed on that George is leaving........ ( Thought Nyck de Vries was in the frame for Williams & Alfa’s 2nd Seat)
