Is that not what yhey said about LH?
No. What they said was that his 30k of test miles showed what a talent he was. Magnussen doesn't come with that 'guarantee' but to say he isn't ready is to dismiss those hours in the simulator and his performance in FR3.5Could well be all about 2015 and Honda era, next year still messy for McLaren with a 1 year engine deal. Well known that MW was trying to place Magnusson somewhere for next year if at all possible, a year's experience and watching his performance without risk. However then Checo was unspectacular (and awkward to work with, if you believe current gossip) - now couple that with no seat for Kev in another team, a trial year for the chassis in 2014, and wanting Kev for 2015 but not with no experience. Hell roll the dice, probably no worse off than with Checo and could just be a star is born and appear a genius move.
As for loyalty, doesn't and shouldn't exist at this level. Choose what is best for the team long term... sure it might turn out to be the wrong choice, but with all the information they have they think it's right. An F1 team should never make what they think is the wrong call, just because they feel obligated to someone. If they did that, I'd lose far more respect for the decision makers.

It makes sense to get the new boy in at the ground floor. Button will retire in the next few years, and they'll want someone to anchor the team around who knows how to work within McLaren.
However, the last time they used someone who came up through the "youth training scheme" at McLaren it wasn't an entirely resounding success from a team point of view - it feels to me like they want someone who's been around the paddock a bit as well.

Button surprised by move.
Button, who has said it is important to have experienced drivers next season to help cope with the huge regulation changes in the sport, describes the signing of Magnussen as a "massive risk" and said he was surprised by the decision. "I was surprised last year when Lewis [Hamilton] decided to leave and the same now, but that is what F1 is like. Things change and we learn to adapt."
In the past Button has spoken about the problem of young drivers being unable to give sufficient feedback to a more experienced team-mate but he does not feel that will be an issue with Magnussen. "He is young. He is 21-years-old but he's got a lot more experience than any other youngster who will be coming into Formula One next year.
"It's true that he doesn't have Formula One experience but from what the guys say after his testing in the F1 car he learns very quickly, surprisingly quickly, and his feedback was very good, on the ball. That's good to know. That's the bit that I really care about, whether he can give feedback. We get the same number of days in the car in testing and he needs to give as much feedback as I give to help us move forward. S, so it's important that he learns quickly."

" And that attitude, Oricchio added, is disliked by many. "I've interviewed him a few times, even this year," he explained. "He doesn't look in your eyes and wants it to be over. In his working groups it is no different. In summary, human relationships have so much to do with success in formula one. Without it, you go nowhere," said Oricchio. (GMM)"http://www.f1today.net/en/news/perez-dropped-by-mc...
So he is arrogant based on the fact he doesn't make good eye contact? Perhaps he is on the autistic spectrum or has social anxiety or something.... he certainly does seem a bit uncomfortable in most interviews........

My spotty arche he is...I can see there being a bit of agro next year. If Magnussen is as quick as his hype he'll more often than not out qualify Button, which is then likely to put them together on track during the race; and Button has a ruthless streak which seems to be largely ignored on here, particularly when 2014 seems to be boiling down to Button v Magnussen for the right to partner Alonso in 2015.
