Smashed three of the four corners of the car, front and back and surely ruined the box too (rears still rotating when they hit the barrier).
Glad he's OK, but his F1 career really isn't.
He had the presence of mind to shift from 3 to 2 to N a few seconds after the hit. I'd still be shaking in my boots!Glad he's OK, but his F1 career really isn't.

As Karun is now pointing out, 600-700k worth of damage potentially. Add in the costs to effect the repairs and the value of risk introduced to quali by working on the car in a hurry, that little shunt in a practice session isn't that far off what he's paid to drive the car.
Surely at this point even those who criticise Red Bull for being ruthless cutting their drivers have to concede that he needs to go?
Cut him now and he has a chance to rebuild his career somewhere with less of a spotlight on him, even if it means taking a year out. Keeping him in the firing line potentially ruins his career.

He's underperformed and as a result he's under pressure to perform. Under that pressure he makes mistakes such as just now.... That's not a good trait for a top team driver... It's always sad but I think it's totally fair that he should go - he's shown potential, he's been tested by being given the opportunity and the results are pretty clear.

I'd love to see PER in a seat next year for whoever but it's not done until it's signed
Perez and Gasly have been the two drivers most performing above expectation for me this year. I'm pleased Red Bull have kept Gasly in the Alpha Tauri for next year and not taken him back to the main team but definitely feel Perez has done more than enough to get a go as Max's team mate.Mark-C said:

He has been tried at a higher level and he struggled greatly. Doesn't it make more sense to try someone new rather than someone already tested?

I'm not sure bouncing Gasly back and fourth between the two teams saves face. It just makes them look like they don't know what they're doing - or at least aren't able to assess a driver correctly after the half season he already had.

I would say he's a much better driver now than he was when he got dropped a season and a half ago, but I don't think Red Bull see him as an option. Partly for the reasons you state, but also I don't think they were impressed with they way he handled being demoted in the media.Anyway, Gasly is doing fine at the level he's at. I do feel for Albon - personally I don't like him that much, but would never wish how he must be feeling in that motorhome right now on anyone. To have made it to F1 yet fall short, whilst the others you came up to that level are doing well - Lando's loving life, Russell is showing his worth etc - and then you've just binned it on what must be the most important weekends of his career. And at the same time you can't blame RB for saying "we tried".

But I doubt they're imagining that his new found competitiveness will translate in to him being a consistent high performer if he were to return to the top car. It just makes more sense to try someone new. Perez/Hulk... Not because I believe them to be better, but simply because it's not known that they won't be until they're in the seat and given the opportunity.
Frankly RB could easily afford to give them both a half season in 2021 if they wanted too. I wouldn't blame them, anything to enhance their chances of finding a solid and adaptable second driver ahead of the major shake up in 2022, at which point several drivers might struggle a little.

I know. It's always s![](/inc/images/censored.gif)
I like Hamilton as a driver. I've enjoyed his development and expertise, but I do wish he was out of that Merc seat and in, perhaps, McLaren or RP. He'd be fighting MV in the race.
That fastest lap after strolling around most of the session, and then going out just three or four laps from the end was a bit dispiriting for the other drivers.
