In the same article it says he's looking forward to being a free agent at the end of this year. I think that says it all.

Not alf. Kind of puts him on the spot though doesn't it? He joined Williams with a clear upgrade path in mind, if there's no better offer he'd be better off doing indy for a year rather than bind himself to Williams again.

Given the new regs are just around the corner, I guess a multi-year deal with a fairly ambitious performance related get-out clause might be appealing if he doesn't get a Mercedes seat.

That's an option. Either that or he won't sign anything beyond a one year deal with them... or clauses so he can escape if a better offer shows up, like Ricciardo apparently had with Renault.

Wow, that article is garbage- so this is why I don’t use crash.net...

The headline is classic click bait. Nobody is quoted as having used the word “craves”.

“the Briton has been linked with a possible switch to Mercedes for 2022 following his impressive delays since making his F1 debut in 2019.”

‘Impressive delays’ FFS.

Russian television, via Box of Neutrals podcast (sponsored by manscaped), reporting rumours that an unnamed commentator in Monaco said that George Russell has a two year Mercedes contract starting next season.

Tenuous enough for ya?

Something popped up on my phone a couple of days ago, that Russell is Mercedes bound next season, can't remember where from though.

Not a difficult train of thought though.

To me, the Bottas/ Mercedes relationship feels slightly unsettled in recent times, can't really put my Finger on it, just a feeling. Does Valtteri suspect that he's moving on? Wouldn't be the first time something like this has happened, "almost" reminds me of Hill & the pre German GP Autosport rumours in '96. We'll see.

Bottas' is obviously on his way out- look at his actions, body language, demeanor and words. For example, the way he didn't jump out of the way at Barcelona. He knows there isn't a new contract coming.

Yep have long believed that it’s Russell to Mercedes for ‘22. I think this fact has something to do with Mercedes and Hamilton’s inability to agree terms beyond 2021 as well. I expect they’ll resolve it and Hamilton will remain, but he will have to accept that he is losing Bottas and gaining a potentially more challenging and disruptive teammate.

If I was Mercedes, I wouldn’t want to push Hamilton away, however I also wouldn’t want to waste an opportunity to have the apprentice learn from working in parallel with the master.

If they get all 8 championships then I think they have more to gain from a Hamilton-Russell battle for a year or two, even if it means risking the WDC/WCC.
Lewis is the present but he is not the long term strategic future of the team.

Raikonnen must surely be close to retirement soon. There are also strong rumours that Alfa will not continue their sponsorship with Sauber next year, freeing them up for a tie-in with another manufacturer. It is reported that Renault are looking for a sub team for their PU, so this would be a potential fit. Also, with Giovinazzi being a Ferrari driver, if they swapped to Renault then he could be out, whether Kimi retires or not.

It's still very early, and a lot could happen in the driver market before the end of the year.
I agree, Raikonnen, Alonso and Vettel (In that order) are the drivers I least expect to see on the grid in 2022.
IMO Alonso definitely isn’t going to throw in the towel at the end of this season. Their rhetoric has all been towards being contenders after the regs change.

Raikkonen is well rooted in Sauber, he’s currently performing, he is quite pally with Frederick Vasseur and has stakes in the team so I can see him staying. Giovinnazi has to really pull something out of the bag this season or else old Raikkonen may have killed his career.

I hope Vettel recaptures his form as I feel he still has a lot to give.

An alternative to Williams for Bottas may be to spend a year as 3rd / reserve driver in Mercedes, with a view to slotting back in if Hamilton retires after ‘22?

Apart from Perez, Tsunoda and Giovinazzi, I’m finding it hard to think of drivers who may be vulnerable to losing their F1 drive at the end of this season.

Alonso will definitely be on the grid at the start of next year, if the cars uncompetitive again he may well not be in it by the end of the year imo.

Vettel will still be in the Aston Martin that's all but guaranteed, will he be still in it in 2023? That's to he seen, but there's a nice ambassadorial role waiting for him if he isn't anyway realistically.

Apparently Kimi has a share in Alfa/Sauber in lieu of being paid a massive salary so he'll be in that car until he's talked out of it or just decides he's had enough.

Just been announced that Ocon has been given a three year extension at Alpine, up to the end of 2024 season.

Not sure about Ocon, is he beating a strong Alonso, or is Alonso just not at his best? Ricciardo beat him pretty soundly last year too.

I actually thought Alpine might go for Gasly next year over Ocon, it's still possible if Alonso decides F1 is not for him after all, but I don't see that happening.

Still congrats to Ocon, that's a decent deal and he probably deserves a shot, he's done well for a guy who took an enforced sabbatical a couple of years ago and who knows where Alpine might be when the new cars arrive next year.
