He's just a team boss doing what team bosses have done for time immemorial , if not in the full glare of a self righteous social media mob .

He's a professional pain in the arse. I love hating loving it.

I quite like Toto but I find the whole scene of the constant petty needling from CH bloody hilarious. He's like a fly around a horse.

I think this forum is tough on CH. He improved Jaguar from a laughing stock to champions, attracted and kept Newey, got a tune (and WDC) out of Honda, secured the services of the best driver of this generation for the long term and signed two huge sponsorship deals. He’s also set up a whole new model for F1 engines, which the sport sorely needs. I’d cut him some slack!

I'd agree. You can't really fault what he's achieved.

And he knows he's on a wind-up. I expect he's great company when he's not on company time.

Yep, if Honda had stayed with McLaren they wouldn't have been able to achieve what they did. The RB partnership is what brought out the development, all led by CH.

His ability to wind up large Austrian blokes is just another feather in his cap.

no one is questioning his achievements ...they're questioning his inability to be less of a smug duplicitous prick

One cannot fault the achievements of Christian Horner.

He was the youngest team principal and, as you rightly point out, took a team that was a bit of a laughing stock (Jaguar) and turned them into world champions.

He doesn't say anything without a reason to, that reason being for the benefit of Red Bull. In many ways, he reminds me of a peak Ron Dennis.

However

The guy is under massive pressure from Dr Marko looking over his shoulder every moment of the day so he has to have some release. What better way then busting the balls of Toto.

From the outside looking in, Red Bull does seem like the most fun team to be part of so he must be doing something right.

He's been very successful, there is no doubt there. He comes across as a very slimy individual, perhaps a sociopath, although one suspects there are several of those in F1 circles. Either way, Horner is someone who makes me feel uneasy as he's almost always lying or gaslighting.

Little to admire, despite the success.

Absolutely.

Successful. Disagreeable.

A big assumption there, that Max is the best driver of his generation. I think a number of other drivers are likely to be his equal, or better:

George Russell
Lando Norris
Carlos Sainz
Charles LeClerc

to name but a few.

Plus fast doesn’t mean best, even if you say fastest it doesn’t mean best. His race craft leaves a lot to be desired.

I think in terms of raw talent, Max is the most gifted of his bunch, by that measure alone I'd actually put him up with Hamilton. He's a long, long way from fulfilling it still though, as we saw repeatedly last year with the sort of gung ho moves that are usually ironed out by the time a driver reaches F1 still being regularly used by Max.

It will be interesting to see where he goes from here. He's got his WDC*, he could go on to get further (legitimate) ones, or he could perhaps find things hard going if the drivers listed above 'do a Lewis' and decline to dive out of his way.

I tend to dislike 'Whinger Spice' during the season and particularly when hes sticking up for his drivers failings (whihc actually is a very good thing for a manager to do). But as per above, I thyink actually hes a pretty decent guy, hams it up a bit for TV, porbably enjoys playing the villain a bit too much.

But...

No way, its Mclaren, surely! Have you never watched an episode on 'unboxed' ?!

I would disagree. Max is undoubtedly very fast, probably the fastest. But, that is the only skill he has shown. His race-craft is pretty much non existent and consists of bully-boy tactics. He needs to learn how to play the long game, just like Lewis. His crash or smash approach lost him a lot of points in 2021, starting with the 18 he could have had at Silverstone by coming second and another 18 at Imola.
