OK, my theory in progress:

Ferrari
Sauber -(with Ferrari engine branded as Maserati)
McLaren - (with Ferrari engine branded as Alfa Romeo)
HaaS - Ferrari
Maserati will be used in Formula E

So Sauber will have an Alfa unit along with Mclaren

I think McLaren, Honda and Alonso will still be together next year.

Like it or not, Ron Dennis was right when he said you need works effort to win the championship.

If I were Mclaren, there's little appeal in being a customer team of Ferrari or Renault in order to finish 6th.

I would continue with Honda with some seriously big penalty clauses built in for non-performance.

Interesting to see 2019 silly season has started already with reports ricciardo and Ferrari have signed a pre-contract

It would be funny if Max did the same and they end up being team mates againsmile

There have been similar reports for at least the last two silly seasons without it coming to anything.

It's more likely that Alfa will be in Formula E but not until 2019. Ferrari are very likely to use Maserati to brand customer engines in F1. McLaren are not included in that programme.

Interesting; did you see Marchionne interviewed on Sky on Sunday? He said Fiat would not be used for F-E but referenced other brands and mentioned Maserati.... certainly looks like they are going there. Fits with bringing F1 to being less engine tech and more racing "show" for Liberty. Time will tell...

How big is a seriously big penalty clause, and how do you suggest they enforce it against a supplier/sponser whos already bankrolling the team by all accounts in excess of 150M a year?

I agree.

Not sure about Vandoorne though. He has been consistenly slower.

I just don't see the big deal with Ricciardo.

Vandoorne was confirmed as a Mclaren 2018 race driver by Zak Brown a few GPs ago on Sky F1.

It's Alonso who they are still speaking with (begging) about staying.

My favourite two rumours on the internet at the moment are:

1/ Vettel has truned down $120,000,000 deal to stay at Ferrari, insisting instead on a one year only contract.
2/ Lance Stroll will be moving to Force India, cos daddy's going to buy the team for him.

From what I can gather, both Ferrari and Vettel are at loggerheads regarding a new contract; Vettel wants 1 year as Hamilton's Mercedes contract is up next year, however Ferrari want a multi year contract.

I guess both are reasonably feasible, Vettel doesn't want to be tied into an unbreakable long deal with Ferrari unless he knows they're going give him a car to win the title. If he walks away who can they replace him with for 2018? There isn't really a potential championship winner on the market (they won't have Alonso back) so Seb holds all the cards and feels he can push for a shorter deal.

Force India has been for sale for ages, with both owners in (or approaching) prison they will have to sell soon and the price is likely to come down as it becomes more of a 'distress' sale. Stroll Snr is a very astute businessman so buying the most efficiently run team in the midfield at a knockdown price makes some sense. However, it could just as easily be the less reputable sections of the media jumping to a fairly obvious but quite untrue conclusion in order to drive web traffic during the summer shutdown when there's no real news...

Monza will be the start of things falling into place in my view. Ferrari always like to announce there/

1) Presumably a 3 year deal at $40m/yr? If he wins the title, they'll pay him $40m for a year. Of course, if he wins the title, maybe he'll be persuaded to stay for at least another year until 2019.

2) I can see that happening. It makes me slightly sad. But it's happened at Sauber.

Who, Stroll? Sure, he was only valued at $2.4 billion by Forbes in 2016.

There's an article on Motorsport.com suggesting that there's a chance of Matsusta ending up in a Torro Rosso as part of the Honda engine discussions. He'd need to finish 3rd in GP2 to get a Superlicense which is a tough ask though.

It does of course beg the question of exactly what Helmut Marko was doing when Dani Kvyat walked in on him in order to guarantee himself another new contract 😂
