What is it that they say (and it’s particulalrly true as sport gets ever more highly professional) ..... Hard work beats talent, when talent fails to work hard.
I like the idea that talent alone isn’t enough and you have to make it all come together.
Talent x Effort = Results.I like the idea that talent alone isn’t enough and you have to make it all come together.
I've found that to work for most things in life.

I agree. The only bit one could argue about is the proportion of each. There used to be a saying 99% perspiration, 1% genius. This, I think, is about right for F1 where a 1% advantage is streets ahead. But you would still need a decent car. I've found that to work for most things in life.
Piquet, the elder, was one of the most naturally talented drivers I've seen. The bloke seemed to do just enough to win. That's a tactic we see today.
However, the years he had #1 on his car he seemed to switch off, as if he wanted to enjoy being the focus of attention.
He could have had at least two more WDCs I think.
When the financial implications of running a 100m yacht, complete with second 'wife', started to hit home, he was driving in a team that paid him on results. We saw the best of him then, although it took him a while to crack the system. Outdrive and overdrive are incorrect I think. It is merely - merely? - getting the best out of the car, and that's what Piquet did in his Benetton days, at least after a desultory few races.
He had the talent but for some years the effort was missing and his 1% just wasn't enough.

I do think Vettel's pushed the management into doing this with his mistakes. I think the Ferrari top brass have had enough.
One thing I'm not certain of however is just how good CLc is? We've had plenty of supposed prodigies come through before and not be able to make it. Who's he beat? No one of note, yet...
I think it was karun in the drivetribe podcast who made some interesting observations on leclerk in F3, how he was immediately able to draw the focus of all the engineers in the team to his input and shut out teammates, something that sounded very top driver to me.One thing I'm not certain of however is just how good CLc is? Should be interesting

I think Max has the innate talent to potentially produce some performances in the Senna/Schumacher/Hamilton league, but sadly he does not seem to be learning from his mistakes up to now, or perhaps even accepting them.
It will be really interesting to see if he can get himself together long-term and deliver consistently. Certainly, up to this point, there has been rather more ‘overdriving’ on display than ‘outperforming’ the car.
He has picked up after exploring the full limits at Monaco and a bag load of DNF's.It will be really interesting to see if he can get himself together long-term and deliver consistently. Certainly, up to this point, there has been rather more ‘overdriving’ on display than ‘outperforming’ the car.
In an underpowered car he has since had some decent results. Continued consistency required.
It would be a shame if the Honda PU is a bag of poo next year, as it's always exciting when Max can occasionally drive up into the sharp end

Who is Marcus Erikson. Nice chap, probably better than us but not exactly a great yardstick with which to measure someone.
Well in that case I guess Alonso is only a moderate driver as we can only compare him to VanDorne? The fact is that the ONLY person any driver can be truly appraised against is the chap in the same car, his team mate
A little surprising that Vettel's opened the taps already in FP3 - cracking lap, but if there's that much of a gap, he doesn't need to take that many risks, I'm just waiting for him to take a lunge at a wall again, he certainly seem comfortable in the car though - when he's in the zone at Singapore, it's a joy to watch.
I'd expect Hamilton to be closer in qualifying (my guess would be about 3/10th's off come Q3), he'll be happy Red Bull don't appear to have all their ducks in a row yet. More expletives to come from Max if the power unit keeps playing its own tune...

For those watching on C4, is Lee hot AF or what?
She's certainly OK on the eye, however I wouldn't say she is "hot AF", unless you are referring to the hot weather in Singapore. Sam993 said:
