Oh wow!

Jolyon Palmer in commentary suggested this, as what came across as a somewhat tongue-in-cheek comment, but Williams has actually gone and done it!

Albon has been given Sargeants car for the rest of the weekend. If they have that little faith in Sargesbt why keep him on for this season?
They’re still waiting for Kimi Antonelli to get enough super licence points.

Not going to help Logan's confidence one but, but from a purely results perspective it's the right thing to do.

Assuming Albon doesn't do it again tomorrow ...

I like it, it's a proper old school F1 move, like when they used to bring spare cars and a team's main driver would just nick the spare off their slower team mate if they needed it.

Why wouldn't they? As soon as they said there was no spare chassis I was 100% sure they would do it. It's the only logical choice.

From a racing perspective it’s the obvious choice, when you’re as far as you’ll ever be from home and don’t have enough spare parts, but the political and contractual position still takes some working through. I suspect that Logan and his sponsors need paying off, to have him sit out the rest of the weekend.

Fair play to James Vowles though, for making it happen.

(I still have a vision of the team dragging the chassis to an industrial estate somewhere outside of Melbourne city, and finding someone who can do carbon repairs in the middle of the night) .

Why wouldn't you put Albon in?

It's not a question of confidence in Sargeant, it's a question of recognising who's more likely to give you points.

Adding an objective question, does every team take a spare chassis with them to every race? Just one spare or more?
How many PUs do they take?
How many cars could they effectively build each race weekend?

What is mad is a F1 team being so poorly organised they build their car on excel and don't have enough spare parts - not JV's fault, but the hand he's been dealt. But to punish one driver for the other one making a mistake? Williams must be sure they think they can sneak a 10th or 9th finishing place on Sunday, but it seems incredibly harsh on Logan all for what? A slim chance they equal Haas in the Constructors at the third race of the season? I know every point counts but punishing Logan for Alex's mistake is very poor.

F1 is a brutal business. You have to prioritise potential points.

No idea why people are surprised if you've got a clear number 1 driver then they used to get the spare or now we don't have them the other drivers car.

The running Williams on spreadsheets story is an interesting one, I guess when Clare ran it they were strapped for cash but Dorilton bought it over 3 years ago, so much for cutting edge and they are using the money of a cutting edge hedge fund so it's a strange one, but moving to a new system won't have been easy.

The only potentially controversial aspect is Williams being 3 races in and still no spare chassis.

Those few points could be worth many millions.

All teams are running to a cost capped budget so the ability to build and transport spare parts is not as expansive as it once was. And that aside, it's not unusual this early in the season for the teams not to have yet built up a useful spares inventory. Don't forget that the cars have not seen the inside of the factories since they set off for Bahrain.

If Logan hadn’t stacked it so much last year maybe he would be closer in terms of performance. But he did and is clearly the poorer driver. So it makes sense. He is lucky to have a seat this year tbh.

It’s a sure way to make sure your number 2 driver has zero confidence for the rest of the year. It was Albon’s mistake, he should have to sit it out.

But the main thing is how can a team get to the third race of the season without a spare tub? The first 2 cars were built 5 weeks ago, the team has had no major crash repairs to do. It’s very poor and include Vowles in that.
