Where does he go if not Mercedes or Williams? Where can he go?
If it's true that he does have some long term deal with Mercedes then the big issue comes down to who would be willing to pay to get him out of the contract or if he'd be allowed to go anywhere else.

Aston or Mclaren could be potentials if by some miracle Ricciardo got the boot or Vettel decides to retire with a year left on his deal. If Alonso could go back to Mclaren then anything is possible really

I think McLaren may be the team to watch in the new rules era. They seem like they're on the up and have made some steady incremental improvements over the years. They also know what it's like to be at the back of the grid, so will be pulling out the stops to make sure they don't end up back there.

There is no one more tribal than you on this forum.
Have you met Sparta?

As to Russel not being as good as Bottas. Pardon? We have seen them in the same car, and one overtook the other on track.... More than once......... Guess which one was which. So, we are saying that a bloke squeezing himself into a car and driving it in anger for the first time nearly stuffed the bloke who has been driving his car for years, isn't good enough?/?? Really? I see him in the Merc next year, basically to learn how the team works and build him up to take over when Lewis leaves in two years.. What interests me is, IF I am right, who is going to take the second seat in two years? Lando?

Unless he cocks up spectacularly I'd bet Ocon. He'll have a year left on his Renault deal eh4j Hamilton is out of contract and by that point Russell should have done 2 years ready to takeover as team leader and Ocon as the solid number 2.

Can't see Ocon there, not good enough.

Russell + Gasly. Now that might be an impressive pairing.

I’m wondering, was Hamilton’s comment about Norris so sort of sideways swipe at Russell?

Hmmmmmm... and what did George say on Friday? "I can guarantee that next year I'll be driving a car powered by Mercedes"

~strokes chin~

I'm calling it, Norris to Merc, Bottas to Williams and Russell to McLaren hehe

I don't think so. Hamilton, as well as most of the paddock, will be aware that Russel spanked Norris in F2.

The thought of George going to McLaren has crossed my mind, DR is struggling and they're likely to have a non performance clause on him. British team and 2 marketable, fast young British drivers, what’s not to like?

Even if Russel was better than lando in f2 it doesn’t mean same will happen here. Sometimes people excel in particular formulas

And with the best will in the world he's going to have some catching up to do once/if he finally gets a decent car. Lando has been experiencing the pressure of fighting for podiums etc, George just hasn't had that on a regular basis, no matter how well he did in the Merc for his one off drive.

Russell already has a contract as a Mercedes driver and Norris has just signed a long term deal with Mclaren. While anything can happen, I'll have a whole British pound that doesn't happen.

I definitely had my tongue in my cheek tongue out

How about Ricciardo to Merc (as Bottas has told Toto he's retiring) and Russell to McLaren for an all British dream team?

Tongue still firmly in cheek wink Unless...

Russell replacing Ricciardo wouldn't necessarily be a shock. It does seem like Mclaren have faith in him but things do need to improve in qualifying especially sooner rather than later.

F2 success is not a great indicator of future F1 success, as different drivers mature at different rates and in different series.

Going back to the start of F3000 in 1985, there have been 36 different champions of F3000/GP2/F2. Only eight of those champions have so far gone on to win even a single F1 race, and two have become F1 champions.

Of the other drivers who raced in those series but weren't champions, ten have so far gone on to win F1 races and two have become F1 champions despite relatively mediocre junior results.
