Idea for commentry
Discussion
So what that they make mistakes, doesn't everyone? Murray Walker made loads of them and he's adored (rightfully so) by us. I find the Crofty and Brundle commentary team a good match, way better than when James Allen was on ITV.
I'd like to see/hear more from Ant but I guess until he reduces his driving commitments that won't be happening. As for Senna, no no no! I just can't listen to him. Yes the boy can drive, not as good as his uncle but a lot better than me, but for commentary he's not good enough.
Can't please everyone and I'm sure plenty others don't like Brundle, like Senna and Chandok.
If Sky could've got Brundle and Coulthard back together that would have been good IMO, they had good rapport from being so close outside of their TV roles.
Overall I'm happy with what Sky give us, haven't had the chance to see Ch4's offerings yet but will watch with interest when I get back home.

The trouble with commentary - and especially with mass consumption things and places like this - is that we think everyone is as obsessed with technical detail as us - and the fact of the matter is than 90% of the audience will become confused and then bored in quick succession.
The assumption has to be that the F1 nerds would have been the first to move over to Sky to get all of the races live - and so the marketing imperative to invest in a second commentary team isn't really there.
It's a pefectly food idea objectively, but there is only a small practical application I fear

thats my whole point- theres a broad mix of people tuning in, some of whom will like the constant shouty-shouty-excite-excite-radio1 type of commentary and some (I think you do a disservice to F1 fans with your %'s) will appreciate a more reserved delivery and technical detail. The assumption has to be that the F1 nerds would have been the first to move over to Sky to get all of the races live - and so the marketing imperative to invest in a second commentary team isn't really there.

The latter are well capable of adjusting their sets so sky can have the 30 second attention span commentary as the main effort and the techie one as a selectable b commentary. Both audiences get what they want, whats not to like? Probably won't cost much more if anything- as said sky already have a number of suitably qualified people at races to commentate with brundle to a professional level. I'm sure someone/thing can be found to accompany crofty - a stray dog or a synthesizer programmed with amusing animal noises is probably about right. In fact his commentary could be done in the UK rather than flying to races, it's not like being on-location seems to help him understand whats going on right in front of him half the time so you'd save some airfairs.
As for crofty himself, he survives by virtue of being in a post johnathan legard world where we just set our standards low and take it one day at a time. But he's been clever enough to subtlety get more inane and annoying over time rather than burst onto the scene as a full blown gibbering halfwit and reveal the full extend of his witless drivel and shoddy grasp of the sport on day 1. He's probably not far of james allen levels of tttery right now.

Whats wrong with Brundle/Crofty? I thought they seem to work quite well together??
No problem with Brundle but Croft is a loud, ignorant know it all who gets even the most basic stuff wrong. Brundle's frustration is quite apparent at times.Gassing Station | Formula 1 | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
