The way I read it.

He's a data engineer. He plays with numbers and I'm guessing feeds back the results of how those numbers are changing to other engineers.

But sounds like he want's to expand his knowledge outside of the scope of his specific job, and thought a bit of book reading might be a way to do it.

Aww crap. Now I have to go on that 1/2 day "equality and language" course again. smile

Sorry about that.

Anyway it sounds like if you bring doughnuts, the team will supply the reading materials!!

I'm really not sure whether you're being serious or whether you're being rude. I'd happily start a thread and tell you about my journey!
I'm being serious. Hearing/reading insights from the coalface would be great. Can't get too nerdy on here!

HopeElise, congrats on getting the job.
My guess is that Pirelli would have some in-house training/familiarisation/introductory resources?
What is in place as an induction program for you?
I assume that various people who use your data would help you as that would help them get data they want.
Talking to others will also help you learn the jargon and terminology they use.
Keep us updated BUT.....be careful what info/gossip you divulge! Don't leave yourself open to accusations by Pirelli.

Thank you. Apart from the fact I'm a women, rather than a man. Your sentiment is right. I was a data engineer and I'm now spending the next year as an intern for Pirelli. I have read a huge number of books on VD....
Oh come on!! It cant just be me!? lol

Good luck on new job btw.

I'm pretty sure brain surgeons also read books smile

I'm not sure what you're implying regarding my reading of VD books?

All humans are continually learning so there is nothing wrong with what you are doing. It's the people that think they know everything that are dangerous ones.

I work in F1 and its a constant learning curve as things never sit still. Your input and thoughts can make the difference in the future.

I think it was a cheap laugh with the term 'VD'

As VD = Venereal disease......

pretty sure you didn't mean that subject.....

Hope, I think I worked with your Uncle at a place near Harwich in Essex. He was always enthusiastic about your career choice!

Best of luck and congratulations!

Lots of people would be fascinated with your experiences as an intern in F1.

Have you considered a regular video blog on youtube as well as posting here?

Thank you. I do have a blog although I'm reluctant to post that on here given some people's rather bitter comments. I have thought about a YouTube channel recently too so thank you for the encouragement. I will happily send you my blog details in a private message if you would like to follow my journey.

You’ve got a job that many on here would kill for - some will be grumpy they haven’t got the chance you have (and have seemingly made the effort to get) but so what about what they think? I’d say enjoy it and I’m sure you will for some of it but it’s a tough environment and bloody hard work. Like many here I’d love to hear a bit more about life in F1 so keep us all informed and try and ignore the idiots thumbup

Have a nosy around this website:

http://topics.sae.org/motorsports/automotive/

http://www.sae.org/search/?taxonomy=X7503&qt=t...

The papers etc aren't free but it will give you some leads.

If you just want the basics on slip angles etc, Alan Staniforth has written some good books on racing car design.

Afternoon all,

A week on Monday I start in a new role as a Trackside Tyre Engineer for Pirelli F1. My experience to date is as a Data and Performance Engineer in the BTCC, British GT, Blancpain and VLN Series.

I'm wondering whether anyone has any good text books they'd recommend for vehicle dynamics or tyres? I've got 'Race Car Vehicle Dynamics' by Miliken and Miliken which is currently my bible.

Any suggestions for further reading would be really appreciated.

Thanks,
Hope-Elise
Positive, mental, attitude, great start.

Can't help you with the books but the above (as i suspect you already know having working in motorsport for a while) is soooo true. It is a very small World and some of the people in it are not always as nice as they seem on the surface.

I know little about VD and nothing about tyres but I am party to a lot of very sensitive information about a number of domestic and international series. I very rarely use any of this information on here when posting, and certainly not until it has become public knowledge. I would urge you to do the same. Paint with big brushes and all that...
