Sad sad news this morning. Always admired how he was able to answer tough questions in the drivers briefing and being the voice of reason between them and the regulations. Thoughts with his family.

Very, very sad news. I've spent the past 6 weeks getting uncharacteristically excited about the new F1 season and it just all went flat.

RIP Charlie

Just described on radio 4 as the 'race starter', hardly fitting for someone who was so ingrained into the fabric of F1.

RIP Charlie.
Very true, but how do you explain the depth of his roles in a quick sound bite to the layman?

Very sad news either way, as noted above 66 is no age at all.

Such a shame, he was a thoroughly decent human. Always had time for people.

That's a big shock. There had been some talk about who would replace him, but probably not for a few years. The guy put in 100% every single event so I hope he gets a big send off.

+1. It must have been a tough job acting as arbitor against the multiple F1 factions. Always came across as a really honest and dedicated man. A very hard act to follow. I hope he is properly recognised by the F1 fraternity.

Very sad, always felt that he added a touch of common sense and stability in the self -important world of F1. RIP.

Just in his mid 60’s, reported pulmonary embolism presumably would have been related to, and a complication of, the long haul flight down to Oz, the hidden dangers of flying.

Incidentally his brother Nick owned All Car Equipe near Brands. He was also a successful saloon car racer before meeting an untimely death in 1990....

R.I.P Charlie, I met him once, a genuine gent with F1 in his veins. It's a big knock for the sport.

Really is sad, from the few times you would actually see or hear from him, general broadcasting wise, always came across as a very calm man, succinct and civil in how he talked to people, completely neutral and added that bit of common sense to F1.
Huge boots to fill, someone with that much knowledge of the rule book and being able to deliver that knowledge on a quick basis, truly outstanding man in F1.

What a shock and how terrible for his Family. A massive loss to F1 seems to have been universally respected in the Sport and
66 years old is no age at all.

Saw this pop up on my news feed, the headline cut off before it put a name to who it was and expected it to be Bernie. Was genuinely shocked for a few seconds when I read it was Charlie. It's going to be a tough weekend for everyone that knew him, especially his family. Dealing with this when he's the other side of the world is just going to add o the heartache of losing him far too young.

He will be an incredibly hard person to succeed in the F1 world.
