Aren't the bank angles different on the various ovals? I know Indianapolis is fairly shallow but others are steeper.
They don't run on the high bank circuits NASCAR use, the drivers black out because the vertical G load is too high. They tried it for one weekend a few years ago and that ended with them cancelling the race and CART being sued, which led to their demise.

That was not what I was implying. Don't the bank angles on the circuits they DO use vary?

Yes or no.

I am sure you know the answer is yes.

Then why are you going on about bank angles not being an issue?

I would think it varies from circuit to circuit and therefore there may be some circuits where halos may not be an issue but there may be others where they are. I reckon the Indycar people know what is right for their particular cars and circuits.

Because it's not.

What has tracks having different banking rates got to do with it? All that matters is the peak angle is below the field of view of the halo. The banking rate is also not the only factor, its the angle combined with the dimensions of the curve. A high bank rate with a very long corner will have a flatter sight line than the same bank rate with a short corner,

The indycars race on long ovals with relatively shallow banking, mostly between 9.2 and 14 degrees. Only Texas is an oddball at 24 degrees but that's an oval with long corners.

All of those would fit inside the field of view, they would even cope with Daytona based on the restrictive view from a sportscar prototype cockpit and that's 31 degrees banking with long corners.

NASCAR race on some very short ovals with up to 36 degrees banking.

I expected the mounting to be more recessed, maybe it's less of an issue with stereoscopic vision, but there could be a risk of not even seeing a car in the distance if it was stopped on track.

I saw that and thought pretty much exactly the same.

I suspect stereo vision removes that problem. They couldn't race with a blind spot right in front of them.

It'll be an arse for computer game designers, though. biggrin

So the people who run and design these Indycars are all wrong?

Why are you wasting time debating on the internet?

You are missing out on a career as a consultant to Indycar.

Could it not be if you are wanting to look 'further' round the corner on the banking that you can' t see as far? So for close cars it's fine, but checking out where someone at the exit of the corner is more an issue?

With your superior insights into what matters regarding Indycar safety, I would argue they cannot afford NOT to hire you.

I have it, VR racing has to be experienced to be believed - the level of immersion is huge. Once you try it, you realise it absolutely is the future....Expensive to get in to, but totally worth it

What does the setup involve?

Do you sit and do full length races?!

Obvious comment is the screen doesn't appear to distort at all, which seems at odds with the real world footage..

It's clearly narrower than the distance between a person's eyes though, so it's not going to create a blind-spot as such, just a pair of small zones with no depth perception slightly off-centre, which I suppose could have its own issues.
