He was test driver for McLaren for about three years, then went to Benetton. I don’t think he ever got to race in that era, but of course went on to drive in F1 for Toyota.
No I think it was 2001 when he finally got his break "with as you say Toyota" as a test driver in 2001 and then a race seat for 2002.Only lasted one season however which was a shame.

With regard to Nuvolari, anybody have any extended footage of the German GP of 1935?
The Alfa p3 used to live here, in NZ. Don't know if it still does.
One of my favourite books as a child was this - with artwork by Raymond Briggs - The Alfa p3 used to live here, in NZ. Don't know if it still does.

It was from this book that I first learned of the legend of Nuvolari - and the legend of the Silver Arrows.

If anyone's interest has been stimulated on this thread by discussion of pre war Grand Prix cars then keep 22July free. That is the day the very friendly , often eccentric and sometimes quite bonkers members of the VSCC race their cars at Cadwell Park. It is a gorgeous venue and as close as we get to the old style circuit free of catch fencing and with astonishingly close spectating. Thee are usually a bevy of GP ERAs and Bugattis etc and if you think , like I used to , 'oh , just a bunch of ancient cars being driven slowly by old farts ' you will be blown away and you will never forget the noise and smell.

Worth the watch especially the end when he heads back to the pits and it's like parking the car at a car park rather than a celebration![biggrin](/inc/images/biggrin.gif)

It's actually quite a "modern" car. It was built as recently as 2010 but most of its components are genuinely old. It has a heavily modified Bentley chassis in which has been plonked a 42litre Packard 12 cylinder engine.
It's definitely not a Grand Prix car though.
You have great knowledge. It's definitely not a Grand Prix car though.
Would never have guessed it was that new a build.

That didn't always go so well for him. A few years later, also at Estoril... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_jmnBiFwKw
I am sure at the time the commentators thought it was just cold tyres but clearly it was a suspension issue.Scary accident when you see how close he was to being hit.

The active suspension dropped the rear of the car as it assumed he was on the main straight instead of in the pitlane. Unfortunately there was a big bump on the exit of the pits and the car bottomed out which caused the accident.Scary accident when you see how close he was to being hit.
No pitlane speed limit those days either.
