New car reveals
Discussion
There has to be some bits Mercedes have forgotten to bolt on, that looks anorexic, where is the rest of the bodywork?
Edit to add
The exposed floor area at the rear are for Red Bull and Ferrari to put bags of sand or concrete blocks on, makes sense noe

How is that "halo" going to stop a front wheel landing on top of the drivers helmet?
I don’t like them personally, but whoever has created the design will have been given a brief about what the main aims of the halo. All balanced against threat/risk.A wheel landing with force coming from directly above is a very unlikely scenario as the target car is also going to need to be stationary. Even then the halo probably would deflect some of the force.
The main protection is a wheel or car flying in full frontal or at an angle.
The debate can go around and around about the pros and cons and the necessity of them. I think it’s a solution to a small risk problem which could be tackled with perhaps making the wheel tethering more robust.
They are here now so unlikely they’ll go again as who’s going to sign that off.

Is the Halo a standard item that all teams have to integrate into the car in the best possible way, or is the Halo a different design for each team?
It's a standard item and is supplied to each team by one of three external manufacturers. The teams can do some limited shrouding around it, but the actual Halo structure isn't built by them.Toro Rosso and Sauber have aerofoils on their Halos
Mercedes doesn't...
McLaren and Williams seem to have more sculpture about their side pods... or am I seeing things?
A predictable evolutionary small-steps approach.
As with supercars these days, it's all about the colour(s)
They all so far appear like improvements in that regard except for Renault which for me looked better last year.

I think all of them will have boomerang aerofoils on the halo by the first round. Launch packages often omit detail items like that.Mercedes doesn't...

McLaren are at Navarra in Northern Spain.
I think the airport in the photo is likely to be Vitoria Airport, which is not at all far from the circuit.
Taken circa 2005 I suspect, the upsweep on those sidepods doesn't look current and it appears that various sponsors have been airbrushed out along the side of the truckI think the airport in the photo is likely to be Vitoria Airport, which is not at all far from the circuit.

That logic is a bit like refusing to wear a condom when sleeping with a hooker because it won't protect you if she stabs you....
It'd need to be a pretty bullseye shot - and the halo can guard against other eventualities.
You can't dismiss it just because it doesn't guard against all eventualities.
Well I agree but look at the pics here:It'd need to be a pretty bullseye shot - and the halo can guard against other eventualities.

If you look at a front on pic it doesn't look like it would have saved Massa, and if you look at a side on pic, it doesn't look like it would have saved Surtees. Guessing it would be good though for larger objects coming frontwards, e.g. when Alonso and Grosjean (iirc) clashed at the first corner in Spa a few years back and the car rode over the nose towards the driver

The photo is current. Whether the car it contains is the 2018 article or not is up for debate if you like.
