For me I want to be able to watch in an integrated way on a TV which I can't do with F1TV. I don't want to be faffing with my girlfriend's laptop connecting it up each time I want to watch F1. I want to open an app on the TV and click Play, which NowTv provides across all TVs in our house.

As above its a shame we can't get it in the UK as I would also sign up at £6.99 a month!
All you need is an Amazon 4K Fire TV stick plugged into your TV HDMI port.
I use Express VPN which is always running in the background on the same device.

No laptop is needed.
So I can get a VPN, sign up for f1tvpro (US) buy a firestick, then stream it from my PC to my TV as long as it's on the same WiFi network?

Or from your phone. If your TV supports Airplay or the other one you don't even need a fire stick.

Thing is, I have spent a fortune replacing old TVs with crappy sticks in the back with integrated smart TVs.

I don't want yet another remote. I would also have to have a fire TV stick for each TV otherwise I have to unplug and plug into other TVs. Faff.

Vs the alternative, paying more like £40 per month for NowTV.. For the savings offered I think I'd be happy to cope with one extra remote that I would only use 20 ish times a year.

Personally I just hook my laptop up via HDMI, that's definitely more faff but it still only takes around 60 seconds each time.

I have no idea why they won't simply release a native app for the mainstream TV brands, years ago I assumed it would only be a matter of time... Yet still no app!

I won't pay full price for it.
As discussed normally they do 9 months for 18-20 quid a month at the start of the season. For the ease of being able to watch on every TV natively (and an old NowTV stick I use when going away thats pre-logged in) I dont think thats too bad.

What VPN do people use for F1TV? I've never really ventured into the world of VPNs, briefly used a free one to buy Turkish XBL Gold and YT Premium but I assume for F1TV it has to be kept on for the duration of the broadcast.

I use ExpressVPN and it's always worked flawlessly, get loads of location choices but I just pick somewhere in the US before opening F1 TV and it works fine.

Watch on TSN (The Sports Network) as part of my Bell TV package , no extra charge which is just as well seeing the majority of races start at 0500/0600 .

I have never tried turning it off mid viewing but I would assume that the moment they detect the real IP address location, the stream would stop.

Certainly you can't login and see the full content offering if you don't have your VPN on.

Is there a reason you would want to turn it off?

I’ve just signed up to ExpressVPN and tried to sign up to F1TV. It will let me create an F1TV account but won’t let me log in while I’m connected to the VPN. I just spoke to F1TV support and they confirmed that if you’re connected to a VPN you can’t login. If I disconnect from the VPN I can log in to F1TV but then I only get the UK subscription option.

I just tried, also using expressvpn, works fine. I'm connected to the Portugal vpn server - it should work.

Also it's generally smoother to create the account initially via the app, with the VPN app on your phone running. That way you can pay with apple/google pay, you can't use a UK registered credit/debit card directly to pay as they can see it's a UK card.

I’ve just messed around with the various countries and finally managed to get it to work. All good. It didn’t like me being in the USA so I’m in Canada instead and that works fine.

Does anyone have experience with ProtonVPN? Their free offering looks ideal for this. Or is it too good to be true?

I use ProtonVPN on my laptop - works fine (as free VPN service), although I don't know if it works sufficiently well for streaming F1.

This whole thing is beginning to get a bit like the first rule of Fight Club.

Don't make me remind you.
It's almost the perfect definition of a gray area... There is nothing wrong with using a VPN, in fact it's recommended.

It's also commonly used to subvert regional content controls.. but the very gray area is that sky have sole distributor rights and also sky must know that the F1 TV app makes it exceptionally simple to avoid geo location of the payment method. For some reason FOM are perpetually (it's been years now..) willing to make it possible for users to legally, easily, work around the access protection they have put in place and must be contractually committed to sky and all other exclusive rights holders to maintain. And are sky complaining about that obvious breach...? No. Who knows why, but they will be aware and choose to be openly disinterested and have in fact renewed their exclusive rights license regardless.

There are no laws being broken by the end user, registration and payment is invited by the app - if you happen to be using a perfectly legal VPN. For some reason neither sky or FOM display any interest in prevention of that despite of their contractual agreement between one another. I expect they have an agenda at play, but does this forum even need to have an opinion on the business and rights dealings of two other entities?

Nothing is being stolen, it's just that something is weirdly being made available for legitimate purchase when common sense suggests that's a bit odd. Yet here we are...

Indeed, we aren't talking about dodgy Fire Sticks with 400 free channels and 3pm Premier League games here, we are directly paying for a service via the softest imaginable workaround.

It's probably less gray than using an ad-blocker to surf the web 'for free' whilst sites don't receive a penny in advertising revenue from you.

It doesn't matter - you only need to be on VPN to retrieve the key to view the stream. Once it starts, you can disconnect the VPN and continue to watch from a UK endpoint.

That's the main reason not to flaunt a loophole.
I'm not aware of anyone having these problems with F1 TV (yet). I've done two seasons now and it's been rock solid and an absolute revelation vs Sky. It's significantly more convenient vs the next cheapest option (Now TV), especially if you can't always watch immediately live.

F1 are getting a full price sub directly (unlike say Netflix where VPN is often used to get a much cheaper sub) so I don't see why they would be pushing to stamp this out. Sky presumably don't like it, but it'll be an absolute drop in the ocean compared to the revenue they are losing due to many previous full Sky Sports subscribers moving to Fire Sticks.

FOM booted me off mine in 2020, and refused to refund the money. So buyer beware please.

So set it up again, so far so good. (VPN Nord)

Still have Sky though..

Liberty Media / F1 revenue is something like 25% total is Sky UK. There would be have to be a massive uplift in number of F1 tv subscriptions to balance that out. Or liberty have to invest more in there own races (like Vegas) and adapt there business model.
