I just have this image of his new wife looking up from the marital bed and seeing "It's lights out and away we go" written on the wall!!

It's already in his kitchen, she'll be busy in there keeping his figure intact.

I'd have loved to have heard James Hunt alongside David Croft.
I'd like to see James Hunt do Brundle's grid walk...
Now that would be worth watching, mostly for whether or not he took a swing at some talentless non-entity who knew nothing of F1 but had blagged money-can’t-buy access.

James Hunt was an odd one, when I first started watching in the late 80's I thought he was a bit of an arse, but then I realised that he was just brutally honest, and grew to like the offset he gave to Murray.

So Mr Shouty Not-a-Clue McNamedropper is to step back from 3 races to concentrate on his upcoming nuptials. Now there's a lady I genuinely feel sorry for. I know it's been said, but I can't help but imagine the night in question. "Well darling, it's lights out and .... - oh and you promised you'd do the old switcheroo" vomit

On a serious note, with this news, I was musing what my ideal Sky F1 team revamp might look like.

I'd replace Lazenby with Will Buxton/Lawrence Barretto at 'front of house'. In the comm box would be Ant Davidson beside Martin, but I would also rotate in Jolyon Palmer, Alex Jacques and Alex Brundle, just to keep it fresh.

In the pit lane, I'd prop Ted Kravitz up with Lawrence Barretto (when he's not on anchor duty) and finally, I'd have Jenson Button, Nico Rosberg and Joylon Palmer as driver pundits along with Bernie Collins on strategy and the excellent Sam Collins (his explanations of highly complex technical issues are just superb) as technical guru.

That would be ironic considering how James became an F1 driver by being mates with the biggest pissheads ever to step foot in an F1 padock. They fortunately had a great designer and good mechanics to do the engineering work, but without the knew nothing money he wouldn't have had a career.

Interesting to hear what both Murray Walker and Nigel Roebuck had to say about James. Basically, he was an intolerable, boorish oaf in his racing days, but morphed into a thoughtful, likeable fellow as he got older.

It's very sad he died so young, I'd love to be able to hear what he would have to say about modern racing. He was a very intelligent and articulate bloke.

James probably had some mild kind of mental disorder as he was able to rev himself up so highly to do what he wanted, but he was also so tightly wound he would lash out, there is that famous time he decked a marshal and then almost instantly tried to help him up!!

he was a fascinating chap to listen to at times and would have become I am sure a real compere!

Murray was a fairly tough person at times, he was a dominant character in the box, felt like he should be the only one talking, which is the reason for the shared mic and the occasional tiffs between them, Murray was no saint either in that regard I think!

But when you watch a lot of old stuff James analysis was often right on the nose, he could read things very well and also had an eye for talent as his spotting of lehto and Hakkinen and even Prost and Villeneuve earlier proved for Marlboro.

Buxton, unbearable.
Barretto, marginally less bad
Sam Collins, clueless, winging it and getting away with it.
Palmer is decent
Button is dull and often wrong

I think it’s an assessment that is bang on.

Me too. The only talking heads I actually like listening to are Palmer, Rosberg, Davidson, Webber, Chandhok and, to a lesser degree, the Brundles and Coulthard. The rest I wouldn’t miss if I never heard from them again.

Buxton vs Lazenby, I know where my money would be, but I'm sure there's room for us to agree to disagree. I still think my line-up (also with the addition of Karun, who I missed out) would be infinitely preferable to the current one.

If you had Buxton they'd have to start the coverage half an hour early, just to give him enough time to get the introduction done...

I'd dig up John Bolster if for nothing else than seeing a deerstalker on the grid chat. wink
