regarding objects coming directly from above - inst that what killed Justin Wilson - admittedly on an oval in indycar but a nosecone came of a car in front in a shunt and was fired into the sky - he was next car around and it landed on him.

It happened to John Surtees' grandson though. Killed him outright.

I always thought the Halo was to prevent that type of accident, a flying wheel or car (like when Alonso was nearly decapitated at Hockenheim) coming over the driver. If it's not going to stop the tyres hitting the helmet - and, also, its the human neck which is the weak spot not the helmet - then there's seriously no point in having it.
The Surtees incident had the wheel coming into the cockpit area virtually from the front at an angle, not dropping vertically straight down.

I just can’t see something dropping straight down vertically into the cockpit, it’s coming in at an angle. The speed and forward motion of the impact car would make it nearly impossible to land inside the top of the hoop from straight down.

The longer the wheelbase, the larger the floor and the more downforce available. If the car is longer, then potentially more of the volume of the car can be in the shadow of stuff in front of it, meaning potentially lower drag (which isn't just good for straight line speed: it's good for fuel economy).

The downside of going longer is a less nimble car (polar moment of inertia, as well as straightforward turning circle) in the tight stuff. Overall, F1 tracks aren't that tight. Monaco obviously is, but it's the exception.

You build the car to do well at the majority of circuits rather than at all of them, purely for practicality sake. F1 has not got to a point where there are different chassis for each track type (like, for example, Nascar does).

iirc from the simulations i've seen, the nose cone comes in at about a 30 degree angle & a halo would've probably saved him (indeed it would have been one of the scenarios they would have been looking at when designing the halo)

Please forgive my ignorance, but why does the Ferrari have Alfa Romeo's Quadrifoglio logo on it?

They are both part of FCA, so related companies.

Similar to Renault cars having Infiniti branding from the relationship with Nissan.

That Ferrari looks very "complete" - I know we are still pre-testing, but given the regulations it's a nice piece of design.

So having been up to the circuit today to see the Mercedes running it just confirms how awful the halo is.
It’s been hard enough in recent years to identify the drivers as they sit so low in the cockpit. Now it’s next to impossible. It’s also incredibly ugly.
On the plus side the noise is back. Considerably louder and more purposeful.
One step forward, two steps back.

To be fair F1 drivers change their helmets far too often anyway so it's near impossible to know at times.

I really hate that as a helmet was the stand out feature.

Perhaps having the drivers numbers in lights like LMP might be worth a look.

Or just get rid of the horrendous crap that is the "halo" biggrin

I'm really struggling to like this year's cars. The halo is as offensive as the 2014 noses.

Except the truck is a volvo in the photo, rather than the Mercedes McLaren would have been using in 2005.
The photo is current. Whether the car it contains is the 2018 article or not is up for debate if you like.
Good spot with the Volvo truck and I take it back, looking on F1Technical it does appear to be a current pic of the new car but hopfully an optical illusion with the way the cover is shading the rear end that makes it look like it's got massive wide openings above the coke bottle from 10 years ago biggrin

Those Ferrari intakes stand out as a bit different. May be its the images but they appear to have two openings at the front then an opening on the top? Any explanations on what that's all about?

Similar to what they had last year, the intake itself is further back than it appears due to the vanes and shrouds built up in front of it, so the back edge of the "top" hole is actually the front edge of the intake

Halo is the biggest load of bullst I have ever seen in F1!

Aesthetically embarrassing, with all the talent and resources available, is this the best they could come up with for the 'pinnacle of motorsport'...?!


The cars look TERRIBLE. Toto Wolf seems to agree.

I have been watching F1 for over 25 years ..... but the Halo has killed my interest in F1, as well as Formula E. For quarter of a century, I would eagerly anticipate the new cars and the season ahead ...... not this year. I stumble upon the launch pictures and shudder!

I thought the 1996 raised cockpit sides were ugly:



... but the Halo is just horrific. If IndyCar can come up with a decent looking screen .... so can F1.

The rules dictate maximum length/width but also effectively set the minimum size of the car due to specifying things like the position of the driver's feet relative to the front axle line and also the size/position of crash structures etc. A skinny rear end sitting over a big flat floor means lots of space to direct clean undisturbed air across the top of the diffuser so it all serves a purpose.
