funny how things turn out, then. He pwned Hamilton wheel to wheel today, but LH won by having it handed to him on a plate with pit strategy, plus the roadblock formerly known as V Bottas.
I thought meeting kimi would have put you in a better moodsuffolk009 said:
I enjoyed watching that.
If I was being charitable, I'd say that Vandoorne was caught out by Massa's closing speed. Palmer's just not showing up for race day. Nice drive from the FI guys. Stroll had an unremarkable track day (what did today cost his dad £1.5m - £2m - ish?)
BTW Brundle chatting to Bernie on the grid about buying Force India and renaming it Brabham - that's not a real thing is it?
Is it time to start a silly season thread yet?
Loved it when Bob Fearnley said Bernie had just made him redundant. Bernie was on form!!If I was being charitable, I'd say that Vandoorne was caught out by Massa's closing speed. Maybe its me but Mrs111R said the same thing; these last 2 races seemed so dull. The last race could have lasted 1 lap for all the overtaking there was and this race was not a lot better. We fast forwarded at least half of it and missed nothing. I don';t know what it is, I've loved F1 for years but this year just seems a a bit of an anticlimax...

Stop watching F1 because you clearly don't get it. you cant fast forward a strategic race and then expect to understand it.This race was great.
Well, it's mothers day over here, so I had to stop watching at lap 30 with things set up nicely. Have now watched the end.
There doesn't seem to have been much comment on the timing of Lewis's second stop. I thought that they should have come in the previous lap to get the VSC benefit, but Lewis went around. He then stopped the following time, right as the VSC was ending. But while he didn't get the full benefit, he got some of it, and when Vettel stopped the following lap, that 8s lead was zero. Yes, Lewis didn't quite clear him, but with the offset on the tyres he made it stick as soon as they were in clear air.
Now, had Lewis stopped on the first lap of the VSC, I'm sure Ferrari would have done on the second. And instead of making up 8s, my guess is he would have made up virtually nothing. On top of this, Merc did the right thing, even if it was obvious, to go for the opposite tyres to Vettel.
So while Lewis won it on the road, the team got him into position, with a clever piece of thinking. Bottas also helped with reducing Vettel's lead by 4s earlier in the race. Even though I was screaming that Bottas should have made him go around the outside. Mind you, the US commentators were wondering if Vettel had made two moves. <<rolleyes>>
A good race overall, although we could do without losing 2 of the top 6 on the first corner. Great day's work for Force India as a result though.

Vandoorne needs to wake up I genuinely still don't believe he deserves the mclaren drive
He's a lot slower than Fred to the point it's embarrassing and he then hits massa
I can't see him doing well at monaco

I often wonder what people are looking for when they fast forward a race. An overtake? A crash?
Many of these things develop over several laps - the ancipation of someone closing in, is he close enough to start considering a pass? Where will it happen? When? How are their tyres bearing up? What's their strategy?
I'm sure that a pass in isolation with no build-up is a poor substitute. I'd rather watch a highlights programme than try to FF through a full race because you'd miss so much.

Interesting race between the top 2... But Ricciardo in 3rd finished nearly a lap behind, and everyone else was lapped. The difference with the top 2 teams and the rest is ridiculous.
Two of the top six cars were out at the first corner and yet we had a race long battle for the lead. The 89 British GP is my favourite, where just two cars were on the lead lap. That too built up slowly, that too had action all down the field, that had two great drivers at the peak of their form, that too was a cracker.
What's not to like about this one? I would agree that it might have been better if the overtake for the lead came nearer the end of the race, but you can't have everything.
It was a cracker. There were overtakes all through. Interesting is hardly an apt description of what was an exciting race.
The timing of LH's pit stop caught me out. I was critical of it right up until the battle for turn 1 as Vettel came out of the pits. That was a big Wow!
I struggle to empathise with those who didn't think this was the best race of the season so far and likely to be the best race of the season.
Well done Ocon. And a Sauber in the points. And a battle for the lead that went on for quite a few laps, and I wasn't sure it was over for a number more.
I stated just before the start of the season that the battle between Ricciardo and Verstappen would be the one to watch. Can't wait.

I think even Seb would begrudgingly accept that was a pretty good move by Hamilton and you'd expect Bottas to have a very wide car.
Shame Massa had an unwanted influence on others.
Mind you, my daughter was watching the podium with me and shrieked "What has he done to his hair?!".
My words were 'thats a good transplant'. Is have mine, I have since Uni in 97 even though I have the hairline etc still. Dude just shaveShame Massa had an unwanted influence on others.
