Can't see this mentioned elsewhere , China to lose 2022 race due to Covid and to be replaced by Emilia Romagna race at Imola .

Bit odd to cancel it so far in advance. The Chinese are apparently not in any rush to 'get back to normal' and live with this bloody virus.

Happy enough to see F1 back at Imola though.

- They are hosting the Winter Olympics in Feb though.

What was the fan turn out like at the previous races? I seem to remember one Friday when the pollution looked like fog and also remember hearing tickets were being offered half price (might even have been free)

I know, it doesn't make much sense. I guess that per competitor the overall staffing of the winter Olympics is less than a GP, even without spectators. Still, weird to have one but not the other confused

Whatever, no great loss really and a big gain in the form of Imola smile

I'm old enough to remember the days when you had to have held non-championship F1 races (remember them?) before you were allowed to host a WC event.

Their Covid protocols for the Olympics includes a quarantine period for all foreign athletes and staff, and they weren't willing to provide different protocols just to suit F1. Same rules for all, so hosting the race becomes impractical.

Ahh makes sense.

Well, kinda... One has to wonder how long they're going to maintain such strict protocols for..

The race events i have attended so far outside the UK have all required a government dispensation with elite sports waiver and multiple Covid tests before, during and after the events. It's a pain in the arse (or nose in this case biggrin ) but has to be done.

For Paul Ricard i had 5 Covid tests and spent half my time filling out online forms for the French and UK governments. For Spa unless i was double jabbed i wasn't getting in the circuit, i had to take a test at the gates and quarantine until the results came in negative, then i had a daily phone call from the Belgium Covid police, final call checked i was back out of the country and had a day 2 test on return. Three sets of online forms for that one too. Penalty for not doing all that was 8 days to 6 months in prison and a €500 fine. biggrin Great fun...........

Next stop Goodwood tomorrow then straight to Spain for more nose poking...... laugh

Same for me in film industry, also has special dispensation but follows the same protocols as international sport - and not just when travelling overseas... I get nasally assaulted at least every 48 hours working in the UK too!

Thankfully for most countries/borders the testing requirements are becoming a little less OTT now, although the PLF paperwork remains.. Cases seem to rising mind you, even in well vaccinated countries... rolleyes I think this might take another year of faffing about until the public and politicians jointly accept that we really do just have to live with it and cut the red tape.

Enjoy Spain, October is a decent month weather-wise for work, still sunny but not too sweaty!

Word from relatives in Hong Kong is that current levels of restrictions (quarantine etc) will remain until after the Winter Olympics.

Looks like China is doing everything to can to prevent the games being in jeopardy.

That does make some sense.. but on the other hand, F1 protocols have proven so effective that it's hard to see the risk. Especially on a national level. Granted though, the winter Olympics is a pretty big deal to host.

I'm a bit surprised the announcement of next year's calendar hasn't prompted a bit more debate on here. It's another crazy long season but also some really great circuits retained - imola in place of China being an obvious one.

Also I would have thought the ste show that is the Miami car park circuit might have triggered some angst biggrin

I think that apart from drivers going down with Covid, F1 has been very good at not letting the F1 news carousel get overtaken by team members getting covid.
Stroll, Perez, Hamilton, Leclerc, Norris, Gasly and Raikkonen have all had it.
That's 1/4 of the drivers from the last two seasons ( 3 of whom have only raced because of one of the regular F1 drivers getting covid) - much more than average.

Not worth worrying about until next year I think, who knows what the next lurch is likely to be between Covid, Energy and Taiwan tensions.

The new circuits have a habit of not happening too, so no sense starting to think about Miami even if times were normal.
