Verstappen rags rental car round Algarve race circuit!

https://mol.im/a/12914185 via https://dailym.ai/android

Well, probably not, but that was a gap in the article hehe.

I need better friends... must be a cracking experience driving the circuit with Max, watching him lap you twice a lap smile.

I know why he wasn't rented a car, but I thought the juxtaposition of hire car and race track was amusing smile. I'm on my own clearly, so I'll bow out smile.

He's been quite vocal about his interest in Endurance and SIM racing, so makes sense i guess. Be interesting to see what his times were compred to current drivers of that car at the same circuit.
Not sure if I've seen laptimes published on the same day from real life GT3 tests so it's incomparable really, track temps/evolution etc.

But on Sim racing he's highly impressive. Yes he's an F1 driver etc but the people he races against on iRacing, this is essentially their job. They wake up and start practicing for whichever race they do, putting in 8+ hours a day is not unheard off. For Max to match and even beat them is highly impressive as though the skills are comparable, they don't translate 100%. Due to his day job and training/corporate events/home life, Max obviously doesn't get anywhere near as much time as he really wants on sim racing to practice yet he's always right there with the very best sim racers.

There is no weight advantage/disadvantage, mechanically the cars are all identical (no better/worse engines, no driving around a problem such as a failing gearbox or unbalanced tyre), in some ways it's the most fair way to test someones skill. Lando Norris plays a lot of sim racing as well and he's significantly off what Max accomplishes. Of course that doesn't tell the full story but does say something about Max's adaptability and competitiveness.

During lockdown a lot of F1 drivers started to stream on iracing. Some really struggled to adapt, others did ok.

Alonso is on iracing as well, though he often drives obscure cars like the formula Vee or the MX5. Interestingly both are momentum cars. He does very well in those (not a huge surprise giving his adaptability in anything he drives).

I dunno what he is like spare time wise in general and how common this sort of thing is but I'm sure I've seen things about him being back online racing within 2-3 hours of winning an F1 GP.

he has done that indeed.

A lot of people are under the illusion that an F1 driver's schedule basically is drive about on fridays + weekend and then it's time off...

The physical training schedule alone is quite intense. Traveling (even with a private jet) is time intensive, too. You'll be at the track on thursday morning already. Interviews, TV commitments, corporate stuff, family life (often in different countries/continents), that adds up quick.

Compare that to the average top of the line sim racer (the guys he's competing against) who in most cases has to walk to another room in his house/apartment and can log laps hour after hour, suddenly it's not a lot of time he spends on the virtual track.

This sums the lad up. He just wants to move anything on four wheels as fast as he can.

I can't fail to admire him for that.

What? It was a light-hearted comment that was about any F1 driver's attitude to anything with wheels.
