When mansell came back for those races in 1994 he was never as fast as damon, in either quali or race trim. There are some caveats in there but it impressed a lot in the paddock

We like Damon in this household.

I always worry that if I ever get the chance to meet him, he'll be having a bad day and it'll become of those "don't meet your heros" moments

Anyone met him in real life as in not at a function where he was there officially.

Yeah, got to know him 30 years ago when he was still in F3000. Really nice guy, used meet up in a pub near Oxford Street when he was still couriering and looking for sponsorship. Just wanted to chat about motor racing and guitars! smile

I enjoyed that clip nearly as much as Damon smile
Been watching f1 since the late 70's,he has always been the bloke I rooted for.
Still got my cap in london rowing club colours and my yellow jordan shirt!

Although that engine had serious lag, when it did spool up boy did it go! Not suprised he was being carefull with it,especially at monaco.

Being a tight wad that refuses to pay to watch f1,I don't see Damon that often, and I'm still suprised seeing him with grey hair/eyebrows. Is that just me confused

frown Although If it had to happen, I guess I'd rather it happen at Monaco than on a faster circuit. Was that fuel pouring out of the front as it was being lifted? eek No wonder F1 had such a high rate of attrition!

Hill is under appreciated as a driver by a lot of people imo. Took on the impossible task.at Williams and nearly pulled off the miracle championship in 94, battled some of the greatest drivers in history, Prost, Mansel for a small period, Hakkinen, Schumacher. And on his day was as quick as and even quicker than all.

Got stitched up by Williams though big style. Put me off them as a team for a long time.

Nice guy. Bit safe for me though...

"Hill, who won 22 Grand Prix and a Formula One world championship, said he hardly ever drives above 70mph because "it's too stressful".

The Government is consulting on raising the speed limit from 70mph to 80mph on English and Welsh motorways.

The F1 champ, who retired in 1999, told the Radio Times: "Most people aren't safe to drive over 55.

"Honestly, the speed limit going up to 80mph makes me shudder..."

Why the dislike of Damon?

He won an F1 title - crap drivers don't do that.

He pulled Williams together in '94 after Imola - crap driver s don't do that.

He won, what, 22 GP's? Crap drivers don't do that.

He drove a very old F1 turbo car around Monaco - the very first F1 turbo car complete with poor grip, lots of turbo lag etc - around Monaco relatively slowly.

So what if he wasn't driving balls out?

If he had done that & binned the car people would be calling him a wker, stupid, blah blah blah so drove sensibly.

I bet that had he been let loose at Silverstone - where there are not walls so close to the circuit - he would have driven quite a lot faster.

So let us be thankful that Renault allowed him the chance to drive that car & we got the chance to see & hear it again.

If nothing else it showed how a 1.6 litre turbo engine should sound like...........

I liked the bit after when discussing with Prost and Hill is saying essentially how fast it felt.
Prost says "what gear did you get into"
Hill "4th"
Prost "there's two more you know!!"

Great feature.

Translation.

Most like 99.99% of drivers are not up to his standard. So dealing with their unpredictability is stressful if you have the kids in the car. That's not even wrogn is it. How often do you see texting, lane discipline all manner of nonsense.

And TBH, once you;ve been through old Tamburello at 190 probably difficult to get kicks in a road car.

A quietly spoken, endlessly polite, incredibly modest and self effacing chap. What isn't there to like about the bloke? Who cares if he didn't rag the arse off of the car. Mind you, I've seen Herbert on it in historic stuff and I can assure you, he gives it a good seeing-to.

If he finds driving over 70mph too stressful maybe road driving isn't for him.

I'd prefer no speed limits on motorways, autobahn style. It's not about kicks, it's about getting from A to B at a reasonable pace.

I went to a party at Phil Reads house over 30 years ago and Damon's mum Bette was there , easy to see where he gets his good manners and attitude from .
