It's the same with rugby. I was given a video of pre-professional 'great' rugby matches and they were a shock, despite me having watched many of them at the time. The match nowadays has a number of significant changes. There's a lot based on health and safety, especially in the scrums and tackles. For instance, there were concerns that players were getting seriously injured with the fitter and faster requirement so they invented replacements. Problem solved.substitutes

Rugby nowadays is much better to play and watch yet people still bemoan the 'good old days' when anyone who could break into anything faster than a walk was a winger. There are those who suggest that these old style players would run rings around any current team but some of the international players wouldn't be in the championship team regulars.
