Is Johnny Herbert on his period?

He maybe does not realise what he is doing? That is a sign of mental health issues.
I am not saying Alonso does definitely have problems, but it does seem all a bit out of his normal character.
He has always been a petulant prick..... the only difference now is he isn't getting the results.... people will ignore / forgive you when you are an winning prick, but not a losing one. I am not saying Alonso does definitely have problems, but it does seem all a bit out of his normal character.

Herbert definitely has a chip on his shoulder, ironically his three wins in F1 all came by default, twice due to Schumacher/Hill clashes and once due to a Ralf puncture. He never actually won an F1 race on merit. Ironic that if it had not been for Schumacher family misfortunes he may never have won a race.
He has had a pathological hatred of Schumacher and Briatore ever since 1995 and the whole 'cheeky chappy' persona is fake and hides a lot of bitterness in my opinion.
The most telling part of the Alonso exchange was how chummy he suddenly acted when FA doorstepped him. The guy is false and fake through and through, he was clearly trying to act friendly to Alonso's face whilst talking utter b***ocks a few seconds before.
Sky do have a tabloid agenda so no one should be surprised by their constant attempts to create controversy where there is none. I am surprised that CH4 on presumably a fractional budget has done such a great job in only two races with thoughtful and intelligent insight, something Sky have not achieved in years (Brundle and Davidson excepted).
Anyone who thinks Alonso is past it has clearly forgotten two seasons ago when he was putting a diabolical Ferrari into places that car had no right to be. He may or may not win again but undoubtedly is one of the best on the grid, also according to his current F1 contemporaries, not a washed up third rate driver from 20 years ago.
To be fair, everyone I know in the business doesn't have a good word to say about Briatore. They can't all be 'bitter' can they?He has had a pathological hatred of Schumacher and Briatore ever since 1995 and the whole 'cheeky chappy' persona is fake and hides a lot of bitterness in my opinion.

My experiences with Johnny have been nothing less than good. Genuine, expresses an opinion and comes across as a a fan of drivers who are out there to race. But I accept that your experiences with him, be they 'on' or 'off' record might be different.
I agree, by the way, that Alonso hadn't lost the desire nor ability. At least I hope that we don't hear that he has taken a sabbatical in favour of Stoffel! The McLaren, as others have said on PH, needs input from experienced drivers. It seems that there's a lot of latent potential in it.

Always a gent, and happy to spend time with us. And some great moments and photos for our family.
So, sorry your experiences aren't as positive as ours

I think even Hamilton's acknowledged he won't be in F1 forever.

Johnnys job as a journo is to ask the questions the fans are all asking, surely? How wrong or misguided the questions might be is neither here nor there.
That's fine but he didn't ask a question did he? He made clear his view that Alonso should retire and supported that with his own reasons why, most of which don't stand up to scrutiny and most of which he isn't qualified to comment on, as Alonso pinged out.I've met JH a number of times, mainly at the Kings Cross charity races organised by his fan club a few years ago. He's a nice enough guy but IMO out of his comfort zone where he is now.
I guess if he wasn't an ex driver he'd be forgiven on the basis that he knows no better; as it is maybe many think he should know better?

I think part of JH's role is to offer opinions as well as ask questions. I would rather presenters / journalists be critical than sycophantic. Some of them seem to be head of the various driver's fan clubs, for example Andrew Benson with Alonso... it is all rather cringey. REALIST123 said:

Whether it was expressed as a question or statement is a moot point - many people are asking if Alonsos done, and I for one find his reaction interesting which effectively justifies it. A lot of people do seem to creep around him like some kind of deity, which I don't get - admittedly he was one of the quickest throughout most of his career but in many ways he never really came back from being shown up by a noob or crashgate and seems to have inherited a position as an F1 statesman more through elimination.hairyben said:

His reaction effectively justifies it? I'm glad he pulled JH up for talking st. Saying his mate Jenson has done a better job, when neither has had a stand out performance for McLaren, whilst they've been teammates, mainly due to the car. Also said Alonso had lost some of his raw pace and ability, based on the last 5 races of last season.
Martin Brundle said he totally disagreed with JH's comments as well.

F1 coverage needs commentators and.... oh look, nothing else, Brundle and Shouty Mouth are safe plus a couple of camera people, the other 452 people SKY insist on taking are pointless! Even Pitlane man is largely irrelevant FFS, Murry Walker did F1 on his own or as a pair for decades and no one complaining, the coverage is only marginally better now and its not because SKY took an entire 747 to get their team there.
So you don't like the fact Sky have invested loads of money to give you all the 24 hour coverage you could ever want, interviews, paddock behind the scenes bits, Anthony on the Skypad etc and would prefer Murray shouting at the wrong car for 2 hours? Seriously- could Ted and Martin not do the Practice, Quali and Race all by themselves plus one camera team, so maybe 10people tops?
By my count they currently have about 10 presenters and maybe 4 or 5 camera/sound teams, probably 30-40people? They even take an extra bint with them who only does the F1 show, who the hell is she?
Since its Sky's own channel the channel space costs them relatively little I presume, whereas sending all these people around the world must cost a fortune? Didn't Murry used to do some of the commentating just watching the live feed- he can't be blamed for the occasional cock-up.

What does that make Herbert then?
Don't think Herbert was rated by anyone as a driver, isn't rated now as a pundit.whatxd said:
I remember in 2000 when he was retiring and in one of his last interviews as a racing driver, he said that Schumacher was the rotten egg of Formula 1. It was bizarre and completely unprovoked.
You can all look through your rose tinted glasses if you like but Schuey was a cheating bd who cost Damon a world title and caused problems at many tracks with his antics and Johnny had it spot on. Likes Fast Cars said:
