I very rarely use any of this information on here when posting, and certainly not until it has become public knowledge. I would urge you to do the same. Paint with big brushes and all that...

Afternoon all,

A week on Monday I start in a new role as a Trackside Tyre Engineer for Pirelli F1. My experience to date is as a Data and Performance Engineer in the BTCC, British GT, Blancpain and VLN Series.

I'm wondering whether anyone has any good text books they'd recommend for vehicle dynamics or tyres? I've got 'Race Car Vehicle Dynamics' by Miliken and Miliken which is currently my bible.

Any suggestions for further reading would be really appreciated.

Thanks,
Hope-Elise
Hi Hope, good luck with the placement.

The Milliken book is pretty dry and theoretical.

Best I can suggest is to get hold of the books by Carrol Smith, they are well written and will give you a very good grounding. http://www.carrollsmith.com/books/

You can buy the whole set for $99 and will find something useful in each book.

The longer you work in this field, the more you realise you don't know enough, you will always be learning, so a great attitude to start with.

Car Suspension and Handling - Donald Bastow was always the bible in the old days at Lotus. Otherwise F1 Technology by Peter G Wright is a well written book of F1 engineering theory.

Best wishes for you in your new post. Great that you want to learn as much as possible and there is a lot of useful advice to be gained from this forum (But a few keyboard idiots..as ever).
Updates as to your progress would be very much appreciated but I bet you will be extremely busy very soon. I'm sure Pirelli will be very supportive in your internship.
It is a fantastic opportunity and there are many envious, in a nice way, people here! PM sent

Dream job? So your dream isn't driving an F1 car, but to stand at the side of the track as people rag a car around? Isn't it not that far removed from the gimps in luminous jackets at the side of roads counting cars?

Driving the car is a rather unlikely job for all but a few in this world.

You think working in motorsport is like being a gimp in a luminous jacket counting cars? laugh

Sure it won't be as good as the cutting edge info in the latest F1 tech
but this isn't a bad document http://www.dimnp.unipi.it/guiggiani-m/Michelin_Tir...
Doesn't seem to be a Pirelli one around -they must keep all their top secret knowledge in house

Being a gimp in a luminous jacket counting cars is probably less frustrating.

That's why it would be a dream...you see?

It's like dreaming of being married and having two kids instead of dreaming about shagging supermodels...

No..no..actually it's like dreaming of being the guy who holds the sound mic in a porn film rather than dreaming of being the bloke doing the shagging....

Hope what's your position going to be? If you're working with a team you'll develop a decent working relationship with some of the chassis engineers. Get to know them and I'm sure over lunch / dinner especially at the tests they'd be only too happy to impart some of their knowledge and help you along - afterall, the more you understand the more valuable you'll be to them.

Otherwise keep your ears on. You'll pick up a lot just being there.

+1 for the Carroll Smith books. Tune to win is required reading for Formula student at my uni. It's an interesting book and also helps highlight what performance improvement can be achieved in different areas compared to others.

Also stops people from saying MORE POWER!!! when looking for more performance hehe

No it doesn't!hehe

To quote the brilliant Mark Donohue: “If you can leave two black lines from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, then you have enough horsepower.”

Asking for any additional reading resources? Apologies if it's come across that I'm asking for GCSE textbooks. I've just seen a lot of race engineers on here from f1, btcc, gt and wondered whether they had any 'go to' resources for vehicle dynamics or tyres. There are so many books available and vehicle dynamics books are notoriously riddled with errors. I just thought I'd ask the question to see if I could further enhance my knowledge...
Email poppopbangbang on here.

He'll know (F1 engineer now running a large number of F1 cars for clients).

Two of us who have contributed to this thread will be sitting in the same office as Hope on Monday morning. We have books we can recommend.

Haha, I guess you are right. At least it stops the entire budget from being blown on chasing horsepower driving
