C4 coverage is much better, even during a dull race Edwards and Coulthard have a decent chat or we get some technical detail from the pitlane. Someone winning a grand Prix when it's been obvious they would for well over an hour is not something to get all shouty about. Although thinking about it sky have far more airtime to fill so that's probably an issue for them and the fact that it's live, but the C4 team seems much more like a bunch of knowledgeable fans got together to watch the race and we're listening in and I think that's the key difference.
Without a doubt C4 have got it licked and it has nothing to do with Sky having more air-time to fill because even when C4 were covering an entire race weekend it was slicker, more polished, just more 'expert'.

That Whisper Productions can produce and edit together the shows they do to the level of quality they achieve with just their limited access demonstrates that Sky are just wasting a riches of resources.

The end of Sky's contract can't come soon enough, and there isn't a snowball in hell's chance it will be renewed as it is the thing that stands between Liberty and their ability to sell their F1 streaming service in the UK, not to mention that Sky's new owners are Liberty's biggest rival Comcast, and you can just tell that Whisper are steadfastly maintaining a presence and producing a high quality showcase in readiness to take over the English language production of F1.

I think he's an irritating knowledge vacuum who believes his own hype.

They would both sit in silence otherwise.
However, its unlikely a bloke that travels around all year in the F1 world knows eff all. So its probably an act.
Better Croft than karen who just frankly talks like its a new thing he just discovered.
Karen!?
Karen Chandhok, Karun's sister, didn't know she was a commentator though, funny he's never mentioned her or her job, maybe they don't get on.

I have no problem with Crofty or any of the Sky team, I think they do a good job.

I met Crofty in 2018 either at Spa or Paul Ricard (I can’t remember which) and he was charming. I think he does a good job.

I find him quite annoying, but I find much of the Sky coverage annoying. They have too much airtime they try and fill, with way too many people.

Channel 4 deliver far more quality with less time and fewer people.

I usually watch both (as I am usually sat in a hotel on Monday nights and catch up with the CH4 offering) and disagree - both Sky and Ch4 have good and bad bits - reunite DC and Brundle with Ben Edwards for commentary, Karun and Ted in the pit lane with Jake as anchor.

Croft is ok but only ok, I think the problem is the whole sky ethos that sport must always be spectacular, it's great when it is but don't pretend a crap race is good with false enthusiasm it discredits the team.

I like Crofty and all the other parts of the Sky team tbh. I do kinda get what someone said about them hyping up a crap race, I'd rather they didn't try to big it up when it's a procession.

I don't think people realise quite how difficult a job it actually is. They have 6 or 7 monitors each with the World Feed, individual pictures, multiple in car views, timing screens as well as walls and their desk covered in stats and information. We have one single TV picture to watch most of the time so what we see never changes, they could be looking at paperwork or at an in car view or checking the timing screen for a suitable gap for a pit stop so they can talk about it. It's very difficult to suddenly look up at a screen and be expected to say something within half a second.

Also I ask this a lot, why when Murray used to make mistakes and have to be corrected by Hunt and Brundle is it all 'Good old Murray!' but when Croft makes a mistake of mis-identifying a car where the drivers helmet is almost invisible to the naked eye it's all 'Crofty is st! Get rid of him!'?

I'm sure a lot of this is instruction from FOM to try and generate some excitement or hype.

I heard a particularly relevant nugget of info today from Croft. Something about (I think) last time Alonso was on pole was in 2012, same year as the London Olympics. Glad I pay for Sky F1 to fill in the missing info I need.

I think he’s a fking idiot.

Start of the commentary today - night time qualifying, he quoted “do not go gentle into that good night”. Because it’s a night race and obviously the poem has the word night it. Except it’s about aging, death, and mortality, ffs. What an imbecile.

Yes, he is absolutely unfit for purpose.

I have the TV muted most of the time, always for the first couple of laps of the races. Yesterday I had to mute it at the end of Q2, as he was screaming as the top few cars recorded their (effectively, at that point, irrelevant) times. It's unacceptable.

He is a fat darts commentator who lucked into the best job in F1, where he has no real pressure and gets paid a fortune to clearly add to his considerable weight and shout a lot.

He thinks we all are interested in pointless stats, because he is interested in them as he feels the need to talk endlessly

he shouts far too loudly as if that makes everything sounds exciting, yes, increase the volume, but there is no need to shout.

He adds to his weight every chance he can by taking every gig possible that pays, therefore he is a mercenary about money and is aware of how lucky he is, and that he might get found out, so is cashing in wherever possible.

he has no clue about history as he was not interested in f1 before he got involved so he rarely references it unless told to by producers.

he thinks his catchphrase is so funny it is written in this office in large print on the wall, so he has immense ego.

it is clear he does not get on at all with several people he works with who are fully aware he is a twonk and take joy in catching him out routinely while he tries to play it off as fun and as if they all like each other when they clearly do not.

You do a disservice to slightly drunk beer drinkers.

Croft is an imbecile, I'm amazed so many see fit to defend him, I assume these people enjoy microwave-hamburgers and daytime television. I can't understand what you get from him - do you feel smart every time he makes a mistake? Or is your appreciation so superficial it passes you? It's okay if thats the case I'm not being elitist, there's plenty of sport I have little knowledge of I'll have on in the background with no inkling if the commentary know their onions or are talking out their orifices.

He has zero knowledge of the sport and zero ability to be calm under mild pressure, he can't even remember something as basic as the couple of new driver numbers each season, so you get "well that's the er um er 23 Williams leaving the pits there". It's insulting, we watch tons of Motorsport from top level world series such as motoGP and WSBK down to something as hilarious as BTCC support classes like mini cup and none of it offers commentary anywhere nearly as bad as the drivel sky chuck at us.

Sky don't understand the sport at all and think it needs dumbing down to appeal to a broader audience and someone like croft is fits this requirement.
