Wasn't the "tennis accident" Mark Webber?!
broken shoulder after mountain bike fall iirc ...same injury as JPM's tennis oneI think Webber just hid his injury as feared he wouldn't be allowed to race, JPM just fibbed about how he acquired his - allegedly
From memory, more drivers have missed races for reasons other than F1 crashes in recent years, which is quite astonishing when you think of the history.
Good luck to Fernando in getting himself back fit for the start of the season.
I'm glad he's on the mend and am looking forward to seeing what he can do this year.
On the medical side a "lower jaw" fracture is easy to classify - this is the fracture that boxers might sustain and involves the mandible which, in rough terms, is like an inverted roll bar that gives support and protection to our lower teeth. An "upper jaw" fracture is really a "facial fracture" - involving the maxillary bones (either side of the nose) and possibly extending to the zygomae (cheek bones). These fractures vary considerably in their severity, complexity and healing time. It is probably way too early to give an accurate timescale for his recovery.
Everyone remembers Lauda's 1976 Nurburgring accident - but earlier in the year he was lucky to escape with a few fractured ribs when he rolled his garden tractor. Regarding Alonso's accident it will be 20 years ago next month that Bob Wollek was tragically killed whilst cycling away from the Sebring circuit - so let's count our blessings.

Anyone seen how the accident is suppose to have happened ?
I assume he was trying to be 6 tenths faster than the car and was proven wrong, again, as usual. Remember kids "Fernando is faster than you" until he isn't.Stan the Bat said:

"The collision occurred against the right side of the car.""
I read that as Alonso was cycling up the nearside of a stationary line of traffic and the car he hit turned into the supermarket car park from the other side of the road via a gap in the traffic and would not have been able to see Alonso riding up the inside.

Technically cyclists do an awful lot of undertaking...Assuming that is the way it happened here, I don't know how the rules cover such a situation. Technically the car turning in to the petrol station and crossing in over the opposite lane didn't have right of way as Alonso was already proceeding along that lane...
But also Alonso was in the process of performing and overtaking (undertaking...) manoeuvre, which he can't claim to be safe as he can't claim it was safe to do so at that time - he really can't because it's proven it wasn't.
I think the lesson here is to never undertake lines of cars as a cyclist 'just because you can' unless you're totally confident no one else will manoeuvre that could be unaware of you.

Twice within 200m of my house I've almost been caught the same way, car overtakes and decides to turn left across you. Both times they were making eye contact. Well on one I slammed my hand hard against the passenger window to stop the idiot. Its quite common due to alot of drivers not wearing glasses. The second driver thought he would get out of his car.
Funnily when your cycling helmet is removed it removes the victim look and scares alot of people back to reality.

Or worse, a Robert Kubica style injury.
Hope he recovers quickly, but if reports of fractures are true he’s unlikely to make the start of the season. Hulk the super sub again?
Errmmm think nicky’s was a little bit worse than the KubicaHope he recovers quickly, but if reports of fractures are true he’s unlikely to make the start of the season. Hulk the super sub again?
Without wanting to start something I can't see Alonso doing anything stellar on his return, with or without his exceptional ability to vocalize complaints.
Line of stationary cars in the road. Alonso was undertaking them between the cars and the curb (on the right as in Europe).
At the supermarket, a stationary car had left a gap for any oncoming car to turn left across the flow of traffic and into the supermarket carpark.
Alonso didn't see the car turning left as he was behind the stationary cars and the car turning into the carpark couldn't see him for the same reason until it was too late. Alonso crashed into the car.

Basically Alonso's fault I think. If the car in front is stopped/slowing you'd ideally establish 'why' ahead of passing it..
There was never any doubt he was basically in one piece and 'OK'. So whilst it's good that he's returned home and the doctors are all happy with his results - the more poignant question of whether or not this will affect his performance in the car remains unanswered.
But not for long. Less than 4 weeks until pre-season, which will be an intense and truncated 3 days of driving. If he can do that with no issues then I'd say he's totally in the clear regards this cycling mishap. Other than the blokes car he ran in to probably being a bit grumpy about it
