Also, I can't help thinking that this mess simply wouldn't have happened on Ross Brawn's watch. I've never understood why Merc replaced him with Toto/Niki/Paddy.
My understanding is that he wasn't willing to commit for the long term and Merc needed long term leadership; the Toto/Niki/Paddy/Brawn dynamic was too many brains into one leadership team. I agree with the 'less likely to have happened on Ross Brawn's watch' idea. He would have said that it was a crap idea and that would have been that.
I like the top people at Merc and they always come across as very honest and open (unlike some teams) but they do seem to have a bit too much democracy going on. Why were so many people having input into this preposterous idea? Sometimes you need a benign dictator.

A serious question, maybe I'm missing the point here....
On sky, well after the race, they were talking about safety car "lines". Apparently (and this is the bit I must have misunderstood) they were allowed to go "flat out between the first and second safety car lines" That's down the main straight, around Ste Davote, and a few yards up the hill.
If that is the case, then the cars would have been driving flat out past the marshalls on the track at Ste Davote? Can't be right.

under the VSC they have to drive to a speed limit, under SC they catch up with it and follow it (there are still minimum sector times they have to respect, but that's over the whole sector and it's way higher than the VSC limit)
obviously, they can't go flat out, and still have to respect the flags at the incident, but that still left them all of the pit straight to make some progress.
RE: Brawn, to right, would simply not have happened, the issue with Merc is too many chiefs, you need the man on the pit wall to be the single decision maker, albeit with the others feeding him info.

So with VSC they were doing slow sector times and the team brought Hamilton in to pit. Meanwhile, the VSC changed to a real safety car, the cars went faster than the VSC limit to catch and follow it, and Hamilton lost the lead. Is that what happened?
kind of.the VSC was called, then the SC, the SC pretty much slowed to a stop waiting for the leader (Lewis) and thus when lewis caught it up, he had to slow right down, Lewis then went for the pitlane, whilst the others could then carry on at reasonable pace to catch the SC (which was now well past the pits).
still not convinced Lewis had the gap to do a pitstop at any point, so all abit academic.
I guess it's possible if lewis had attacked the pit lane exit road harder he might just have got to the SC line ahead of Vettel, but then again, he may have come off, crossed the yellow line doing so, as well as possibly incurring the roth of the stewards with the speed required (still went though a flagged section of track).

What did Vettel say to Hamilton when they were together just after Hamilton had got out of his car and was removing his balaclava; it sounded like "you won this race" or "you should have won this race"?
yes, something like that (or 'we know you won this race'). it was at the podium. heard it on the Sky broadcast but it was totally missing from the BBCs.fatboy69 said:
Has anyone heard the full radio transmissions prior to Lewis pitting?
Asking this because a bloke on an F1 faceache group is insistant that it was Lewis's own decision to pit because his tyres were going off & he was worried that he wouldn't be able to keep Rosberg & Vettell behind him until the end of the race.
The bloke says that Toto's statement saying that the team got it wrong was made because they don't want to upset Lewis by blaimg him so they have decided to take the blame themselves!
Lewis could of finished the race on wets, there was no way anyone could of got past if he placed the car carefullyAsking this because a bloke on an F1 faceache group is insistant that it was Lewis's own decision to pit because his tyres were going off & he was worried that he wouldn't be able to keep Rosberg & Vettell behind him until the end of the race.

Niki made that point within minutes of the finish: too many cooks in the kitchen; one person needs to make the call and he identified Paddy Lowe as that man...I like the top people at Merc and they always come across as very honest and open (unlike some teams) but they do seem to have a bit too much democracy going on. (I watched the race on RTL for the first time - they seem to have almost permanent access to Niki!)

If the team knew it was wrong to stop for tyres and Lewis had come in off his own bat, they would have waved him through rather than change his tyres surely.Asking this because a bloke on an F1 faceache group is insistant that it was Lewis's own decision to pit because his tyres were going off & he was worried that he wouldn't be able to keep Rosberg & Vettell behind him until the end of the race.

Team error (you could see however it was defending himself on sky when they zoomed in on the team in the box, can anyone lip read on here ?, would be interesting)

Not sure that Kimi would agree with Ricardo being an honourable driver?.
I didn't actually call him an honourable driver - just that giving back the 4th place he "borrowed" from Kvyat was an honourable gesture. You don't see that sort of thing in F1 very often. After the tap on Kimi, Ricciardo was lucky not to be on the naughty step ....... or in the wall.

This is what I picked up.
"I wish Lewis would get back with that Nicole bird, it was more interesting whatching her than the race"
That's all I got 😃
I'm honestly still amazed that anyone involved in Formula 1 let alone people whose job it is would think a pit stop was appropriate ever in that situation.
It doesn't matter how many seconds in front he was, it could have been 40, you never give up track position. EVER.
Surely the only strategy you consider at Monaco is along the lines of "we make our 1 and only pit stop at lap 38. From lap 20 on if a SC comes out we make our 1 and only pit stop. That's it. No other scenario gets considered unless it rains."
