Trying to watch the Sky coverage of today's action but am on the verge of turning off as I am thoroughly sick of hearing about Bakugate.

I wouldn't mind if there was any further insight or analysis to add, but there isn't.
I had the 5live coverage on in the background and that was ok during the session. You could keep the sky video and add radio ?

Something needs to be done regarding grid penalties as whilst I understand they are trying to ensure a degree of component reliability by restricting how many components can be used during a season without penalty they don't really improve the racing and spectator enjoyment.
It also seems unfair that a competitor could be penalised for having to make a change that could be as a result of an accident that was not his fault.
I realise that this would be difficult to police but surely the technical minds of the rule makers can come up with a better solution.
Ross and Charlie please put your thinking hats on.

Solutions already there, just use a season cap a la engine components

Not perfect but at least it allows teams to manage the units in a less impactfull way while achieving the reliability goals.

Too common sense of course.

We've gone over the grid penalties thing several times.

I think we should get rid of grid penalties for component changes. Dock WCC points instead.

If the driver finishes out of the points their result doesn't count for WCC countback rules.

It was intended to cap costs (like t-cars, etc)

They spent €100Ms on engine development instead...

Yeah, and they end up repairing bits anyway. Red Bull put new bits in gearboxes several times on a Sunday morning for Webber for example.

Its just like banning testing - the teams just went and bought expensive simulators and car test rigs and run those as much as possible instead.. it'd be cheaper to load up a truck and go testing for a week instead...

The Sky coverage is woeful this weekend, the amount of rubbish that Croft, Davidson and Kravitz come out with is at an all time high.

Isn't it just? I don't remember ever hearing so much st in a commentary. Ever.

Surely there's better than that?

The sky bashing is getting boring. If you don't like it, don't watch.

So far all they've done is respond to messages from viewers, they're still doing it now talking about Merc keeping quiet on the gearbox change.

I had to turn it off yesterday, it was so tedious.

That would not be Sky's preferred option.

Has the shark jummped on F1?

Shame about the grid drop for Hamilton, still he'd want that pole for a better grid position. It's predicted to rain during the race tomorrow, so LH to win might get some nice odds?

Currently having a look at the long runs, will post it before Q.

Brake failure for lewis on a big stop, looks a bit scary. Massive plume of dust from the front right as he hit the pedal and the car shook, good job to keep it in a straight line, went off in to the run off. He's got it back to the pits, they removed a wheel and clearly the entire disk was gone.

Going to be some nervousness about a full race distance I guess ? Maybe they'll move to a hard material ?

Mercedes say it was a problem with something that they had done on the car rather than a problem with the actual disc, so maybe just a one off.

You've not been watching the puerile discussion between Craft and Kravitz then, calling gearboxes Alfie and Bertie and making supermarket egg analogies?

Hill telling us that Hamilton can't qualify higher than 5th, given the penalty?

I find it hard to believe there are fans dumb enough to find that worthwhile, but I guess you never know.

The problem is it becomes a circlejerk "hurr durr Crofty speaks ste"

yeah, so did Murray Walker, no-one used to complain when he got driver / corner names wrong or spoke utter gibberish.

Lets go back a bit and remember Legard and Allen. The reality is that Crofty isn't that bad at the job he's meant to be doing. He's not meant to be the expert - thats why he's always accompanied by Brundle, Davidson or Di Resta who are.

If you watched FP2 Davidson and Croft had a discussion over the condition of a car's tyres and if what they could see was graining or pickup. When did the lead commentator ever have that level of detail?

And yes I do see Crofty make a mistake and say to myself "no, thats the other car you plonker".

Watch the pictures, keep an eye on the timing and an ear on the discussion. Surely it can't offend anyone enough to make it impossible.

Hamilton can't start the race higher than 5th (or 6th), which is what Hill was saying. Why does that offend you so much ?

Kravitz was being a bit eccentric, is that not allowed ? what do you want him to report ? part serial numbers? Do you want coverage as dry as the minutes of a company board meeting ?

Frankly, you're picking silly things to get offended about.

Hamilton's brake issue: https://streamable.com/0cjli (may disappear if FOM find it).

How it should look:

Im probably having a bit of a moment here, but why are we saying if hamilton gets pole he will start 5th?

Surely pole (1) plus a 5 place penalty is 6?

Its added on to their position, not added to. so 1st > 5th, 10th > 15th etc.

Nope Bristol spark is right. If Hamilton gets pole, he'll start 6th.

Vettel had the same problem last year. Qualified 4th, started 9th.
