Lots of useful info as always
I'm another person who visits pistonheads because of Piginapoke's brilliant posts, pistonheads need to put him on the payroll. And anyway, what's the point of PH other than like minded people coming together in order to disagree

Red Bull and Max have done an impressive job catching up with Mercedes this year, but despite several great performances from Max a number of his races have been pretty poor.
All I think Lewis needs to do is just keep the pressure on him.
Max has been driving cleanly when he's not had the pressure, but because of that I think he'll make a mistake in the race (intentional or not) and Lewis will just need to be there to take advantage.
other way around surely. Reb Bull started the season strongly and it was Merc playing catch up all yearAll I think Lewis needs to do is just keep the pressure on him.

For some reason I was under the impression the race started at 1400.
Seeing as I finish work at 1404 I'm delighted to see it doesn't start until 1700.

They'll still be pulling Hamilton's car out of the TechPro by the time I switch it on then.

.......Verstappen was on for pole at Saudi until the final corner. The walls are further away in Abu Dhabi.
Doesn't mean anything if you don't actually finish the lap? He wasn't on for pole in the last few hundred metres.... But what he could have done, by not accepting the lap was gone, was to shove the driveshaft through the gearbox. necessitating a new box. He was a lucky bugger on that one!!
Just imagine, 3rd on the grid. 5 grid penalty for a new box making him 8th, and Hamilton then goes and sticks a new ICE in the car, dropping him to 5th and crucially still ahead of Max??

I'd there any figures on how much a new engine gives over a used one and how much an engine turned up to last 1 race would give over one setup to last 4 or 5 races?
Are we talking significant numbers?
According to Max there is for Mercedes but not for Honda.... pyshologically for Max another 100bhpAre we talking significant numbers?

Don’t forget that that same gearbox has to run on Saturday and Sunday in Abu Dhabi. But what he could have done, by not accepting the lap was gone, was to shove the driveshaft through the gearbox. necessitating a new box. He was a lucky bugger on that one!!

They’ll be taking a very close look at it indeed, after it was involved in two accidents in KSA - one with the wall, and one with Lewis.

Ah yes, that's probably more accurate. I think I was more looking at it from the point of view of the Mercs previously looking completely dominant but from the start of the year RB had been there or ahead.Plenty of clever stuff from both teams through the season as well. Both pushing the letter of the law regarding wing flex, Merc playing the game with their Brazil power unit. I'm almost not sure I want it to switch through to the new regulations next year!

If I were Mercedes. I would want Max starting the race in pole position, with Lewis second and Bottas 3rd.
That at least gives Lewis the opportunity to see what Max is up to. And if they get lucky, Bottas has a cheeky lock up and takes Max out
The last thing Lewis wants is Max behind him at the start as it poses the greater risk.
There is still a risk of an incident during an overtake during the race, but that would be much more difficult to disguise. And there is always the opportunity to do something with strategy. Especially if Mercedes Kerr their race pace advantage.
