I am not sure, but I think there is a loophole about measures that improve reliability.

I think that you can update earlier units with them. So you design a more reliable big-end bearing for unit 3 PU and then retro-fit it to 1 & 2.

But it is the MGU-K that is the real problem. It is why we are unlikely to ever see them on normal road cars.

Only updating your engine twice in a season is a little limiting.

To be honest if you think you will have reliability problems it makes sense to try and have updates at the same time you need to replace them. Renault to have an advantage over customers as they can time finished updates for new engines a bit better perhaps?
