These engines are scrap. They've done 1,000 miles or more which is very high mileage for an F1 engine; back in the turbo era it was normal to go through at least two engines a race - one was for qualifying which was specced to (hopefully) last just 12 laps!
1000 miles is the refresh recommended limit for a Cosworth DFV. The majority of the engine is retained during a refresh. Scrap is one thing those Renault engines would not have been.ash73 said:

Next years title to be decided on reliability, not on outright quail / race pace nor wins?

Wouldn't the FIA want to be the ones to dismantle all engines and ensure that there arent any hidden gubbins in there!?
I'm not sure they ever tear down an engine, as far as I know they are sealed in the factory with FIA tags - so it either works on a trust basis or they are inspected when assembled ?NASCAR do tear down engines rnadomly selected after the race.
