No way Alonso will see out this deal, mark my words it will end badly for AM
Yep, it's just a matter of how long that takes...spunkytherabbit said:

Ego hurt? Fred is winning in life just signed up for a multi year deal.
Yeah a little. He has made comment since signing his Aston deal that quite clearly showed he took exception to the fact that any multi year deal with Alpine was dependent on a performance against Piastri to prove he was still quickest. I would say that does show a hurt ego somewhat, but it was a statement about just that. Not a slate on Alonso.I was fundamentally questioning Alpine/Renault's motive in F1 and was hoping someone would test my logic for me.

Yep, it's just a matter of how long that takes...Remember, RBR wouldn't entertain having him, not even Mercedes and Toto (FA's history with Lewis isn't good), he fell out at Ferrari, and at McLaren (first time around at least) and he has started complaining about a few things at Alpine. We know he over-values his own importance (demanding a multi-year deal, and from what I have heard demanding no FP time for Piastri in the first half of the season), as long as Fernando gets what he wants and to hell with long-term team success, he plays the:"harmonious team mate" game. If things were so good at Alpine and there was so much harmony and he was a good team player, then why leave for AM? He could have been more open with them and asked for more money as AM were chasing him, but that is not in his nature (in my opinion).
I truly do believe he has screwed Alpine with this move, there is one constant message and that is he assured Alpine their negotiations were going well, then he drops them in it. Not nice, not decent. The guy is a prize git.

Memories of 2007 ....Lewis really did hand him his ass.

Or... he was a free agent, they weren't offering what he wanted, so he walked. It's not called the Piranha Club for nothing.

Or he was worried Piastri would be as good as all the hype, and he'd been outclassed by a rookie? No chance of Lance beating Alonso ...
How would that have worked? Piastri was only promoted because Alonso jumped ship. Ocon already had a contract (and probably helps being French) so there was no risk of him being dropped.

What is it with Fred that 'endears' him so much to teams?
He seems like a decent enough chap in front of the cameras or when a microphone is shoved under his nose.
Is he really that much of an arse away from the track?
He's often not been all that decent even with a microphone under his nose. He openly criticised Ferrari when he had a decent car, and openly criticised Honda (to the point they wouldn't give him one of their engines in IndyCar) whilst driving for McLaren. He seems like a decent enough chap in front of the cameras or when a microphone is shoved under his nose.

Away from the cameras he's obviously known for blackmailing McLaren at Hungary in 2007, and I will always believe he knew what was going on at Singapore in 2008.
His times with teams other than Enstone have all ended acrimoniously to some extent or other. It was allegedly his rant about the fully-deserved penalty in Canada that led to Vettel walking out of the drivers' briefing in Austria, so he's even managed to annoy drivers outside his own team.
Great driver but a shocking attitude and as someone else commented, he massively over-values his own importance.

i actually take the opposite view - that he might have suspected it (after the event) but Flavio and Pat kept him out of the plan so that he could (truthfully) say on oath that he knew nothing about it.spikyone said:

Singapore and the fact he escaped without any punishment reeks of the corruption that existed in F1 and the FIA and his manager at the time. Same with Ferrari-gate and his role in that, utterly disgraceful, he was in it over his head and got away with no sanction.
He makes my blood boil.
