BE certainly divides opinion, but Abu Dhabi didn't happen on his watch.

Looks like more scrambled egg is now looming. Tail wagging the dog biggrin

That would be a big loss to Motorsport UK.
I think the chances of Liberty being allowed to insert their own mouthpiece into the FIA are slim to feck all after openly publicising it.

Good way of putting pressure on Ben Sulayem but Dave wouldn't compromise himself im sure.

I liked the part where he was talking about the £1m donation to Labour... referring to Tony Blair as a "Conservative like me"!

I'm certain that was a deliberate wind-up! smile

DR would be a great choice though. I've had professional dealings with him in the past and, whilst highly 'commercial', I found him a class act.

Completely.

I've now watched the series and thoroughly enjoyed it. I've no doubt there are all manner of skeletons but there's definitely an awful lot of positive too - he's clearly a proper motorsport man and there is humour, loyalty and kindness amongst the sharp edges and suspect dealings. I finished rather liking him (albeit warily!).

100% he's a brilliant guy and probably should have been in post instead of Ben-S anyway. However surely he is already compromised before he's even off the ground as he's being touted as 'Liberty's man'.....

Can anyone recommend a decent book on the life of BE? Is there such a thing, or would any author find themselves wearing concrete wellies….eek

I read the Tom Bower one 'No Angel', but wasn't very impressed. The Susan Watkins one is probably better.

If you like hagiographies . I think , how can I put this , that the definitive book on this loathsome man will only appear after his death. Wonder if his BFF Putin would turn up to the wake ?

CVC were the real villians.
If they hadn't been so greedy F1 wouldn't now be owned by a media company, with all the conflicts of interest that it brings.

BE admitted he clueless about social media. In his last years he was struggling to help the sport grow for the next generation and was rather dismissive of young fans; typical F1 fan was white, middle-aged male.

Put it another way would there have been Drive to Survive or would he have another crack with F1 Digital/F1TV?

Highly likely the sport had been maxed out in terms of exploitation by BE.
Is social media worth having in financial terms ?
Cost vs ROI.

Drive to Survive is longform TV and coincided nicely with the fat purse of Netflix.

BE struggled to crack the US market and now we have 3 races.

Liberty Media are Yanks. They are possibly aiming for 6 x US races.
A car park in Phoenix is not off the cards.

BE’s customers - those who paid him money - were race promotors and TV companies. He didn’t have a care in the world for anyone else, including the millions of fans of the sport.

Liberty, for all their faults, see things quite differently, and the sport is much better off for it.

Yes, there’s many books written about BCE, that won’t be published before he passes.

The only thing Liberty see differently is that a bigger fan base means they can charge more money from promotors, advertisers and TV companies. They aren't doing anything for the fans themselves if they can't make more money from them in some way in the long run.

The difference is that Liberty understand their role in growing the fan base, especially in a digital world.

They’re also now taking money directly from fans for F1TV - everywhere except the UK that is, where Sky continue to shovel them something like £250m a year.

Because they like money, not because they like the fans.
