Its been a long, long time since I've been on here and a lot has happened. Now after spending the last few years driving about in a campervan, I'm looking to put some fun back into my driving.

Unfortunately, I've got a tight budget, as the title suggests.

Previous cars are the VW Polo G40, Lotus Elise S1, Porsche 928S.

Demands are: Must be a coupe or a saloon and not the sort of thing you normally find outside Halfords whilst the owner is inside looking at something with blue led lights. No hot hatches. I refuse to pay any more than £220 for tax. I want 30+mpg or there abouts. It needs to be well built and give me confidence around the twisty bits.

I've also been looking at the AMG Mercs, C36, C32 but wonder if theres anything better for the money as I've taken my eyes off car for a while now.

Any suggestions?

Do they handle? Will they return 30+mpg?

V12 sounds like a lot of money if it goes tits up. After the 928 I'm a little less reluctant to take the risk.

CL500 for £5k if you can afford the fuel costs?

Mind you not really a "driving fun" type car but a nice cross between a barge and a coupe...

Look at decent late model celicas for £4k or thereabouts with the 190bhp VVTL-i engine. Apparently great handling cars.

Otherwise, my mind is as blank as:

You're not going to get 30MPG out of either of those Mercs, and you're going to struggle to meet that tax requirement as well.

Are M3's too "Halfords" for you?
I thought that the C36 would get 30 driven steadily and the C32 is better again. Anything pre 2001 or 2002 is £220/230 a year to tax.

M3's a my price range are a bit too Halfords for me unfortunately.

Yeah the fuel costs of the CL500 would make me cry and I can't see it being fun car either. The Celica sounds like a good bet, not sure how nippy it is though.

My mate had a C32, and averaged low 20's from his.

Remember, the C36 was a straight 6, the C32 was a supercharged V6.
I was going by the official stats, obviously different in reality. Saying that, I could give a little mpg up, work is on my doorstep so perhaps I'm just being a bit tight.

If you are getting 30mpg out of one of those AMG's you're driving it wrong. They're meant to booted, not driven granny-style.

Realistically you probably need something with an official figure approaching 40mpg to have a chance of averaging 30mpg if you're going to use the "oomph".

C32 will be after the changed in VED rules so I suspect will be more than £220/year.
Don't forget the C43, you will get a very tidy one for £6000 (but doubt it will give better fuel consumption than any of the other two AMG's)

Alternatively you can look at Alpina's, even the newer ones fall under the old VED categories so are relatively cheap to tax. B3 3.3 or 3.4 should do nicely.

I dont know what planet the Op is on but with 6k you can buy an immaculate e36 M3 or E39 535i sport.

Also consider a Audi s4 for 5k an spend 1k on fuel.

What mileage do you do? Will 5mpg over a year have a significant effect?

Audi B5 S4 with a switchable remap. One map for ordinary driving, another for "pressing on". I doubt you'll get 30mpg, but then I can't think of anything with Ooomph that will do that unless you go for an oil burner.

I can point you in the right direction to a beautiful, standard v4 sti impreza in white 1998.
And its plenty fast enough for you sir!
It wont do 30 mpg but at this price you can spend 3 grand out of your budget on fuel.

Its my old car, I was the first owner in the uk and it was imported 2009, it was spotless when I sold it 18 months ago and the chap I sold it to has looked after it, I have just seen it for sale at a dealers. smile

email me if you want the link....smile

The OP said no hot hatches which narrows it down a bit - otherwise some of the VAG 1.8T stable would have oomph and near 30mpg.

Honda Accord Type R? Fast, handles, saloon, pre 2001 road tax.

You can take my CLK500 for £6k if you wish.

2004 04 with absolutely every option box tick. 83k miles and has never missed a beat.

A really belting car that is a hell of a lot quicker than most things. Also, more economical than the CL due to being a bit lighter....
