I have had loads of cars over the years... Some nice stuff like Lancia's Lotus's Caterhams ect, but I have also always run an old car as a family runabout.

Some stick out as ones I have kept for years as they have just gone on and on, and I never tired of them as a daily runabout. My old Peugeot 1.3 309 comes to mind. I did over 100k miles in that!

I have an old Corolla at the moment, with no intentions of moving it on as its in good condition and is worth nothing. I was thinking the other day that its just like an old pair of slippers that you get quite attached to biggrinbiggrin other cars have come and gone...

anyone else got/had a car they became attached to?

Yes. Around this time last year I bought a '99 clk convertible. I wanted to scratch the merc itch and thought the drop top would be nice for the summer. I had intended to get rid at the end of the season but we're still together and I'm looking forward to this summer in it as well. It is like a comfy old pair of slippers as you say.

Funny that. I've had my '00 CLK for six and a half years now, I'd never kept a car more than three years before that. It's worth next to sod all, but I've become quite attached to it. It's a comfy old barge, still looks nice (to me anyway) and has been dead reliable too.

As I was still living in London in the early eighties, I acquired a '72 Triumph Herald: "if you can get it running, you can have it"
Ran it for over two years, cost me pennies and never let me down. It was so relaxing to drive, and so slow I never got pinched for anything. I gave it away when I moved to Germany, afterwards I almost wished I'd brought it with me...

I've had my E36 since almost new in 1998. Weird thing is I can park it in tight spaces around London and mentally know it's parameters.

Just wait for the 'I've dinged my Beemer whilst parking' thread within days laugh

My Corolla too over 60k miles in it so far 134k total. Will run it until it stops. Love the trash it and it never breaks feel of it. Even if it did break it would cost pennies to fix. Have even tried to replace it but came back to it.

Mk3 Mondeo towing barge. Okay so it's not particularly cosseting, doesn't have a particularly soft ride, it's not an auto etc (I consider a Jag to be the ultimate 'slipper' type car), but whenever I slide behind the wheel it's into a comfortable heated leather seat, driving position is exactly where I'd want it... like many others in this thread, it was only supposed to be a stop-gap for a year but I've nearly had it three now.
I often do long drives towing a 900kg trailer and now it just feels right getting in it and going from Surrey to Anglesey or Zandvoort as I did last year... seven hours on the road and I'm not tetchy or knackred afterwards!
The only thing that would make it better for me is an upgraded stereo.

Do these rust like other Mercs of this era?

Otherwise, I might be off to the classifieds.

This - apart from a newer generation V70 that wasn't at all volvo like, almost every Volvo I had have has simply been like an old friend who never lets you down.

Getting into another marque after 5 yrs of Volvos comes as a shock!

I have just bought a 53 plate 320 for not a lot of money ( IMO ) fantastic spec and not a rust mark to be seen, nice drive to.

They can rust, although they're nowhere near as bad as the 210 E Class from the same era. Mine had a small amount start on the rear arch lips and around the boot lock, but it was repaired at MB under warranty nearly four years ago, touch would none since.

Wifes Jimny. Utterly reliable, cheap to run, mocked by those not it the know but not could park it in the smallest spot and it was superb off road, helped by the fact it was cheap so we didn't care if it got dinged. Hardly depreciated either.

Just got to small as the family grew.

My old MGF was like that. I bought it for our honeymoon with the intention of moving it on after the summer.

It turned out to be not only be a very rare model, but an exeptonally preserved example. 2001 Y with 6 K when I got it in 2007. I was the third owner. It had been a demo at a Rover garage my Dad had used and the sales recept was made out by the guy who sold my Dad a Rover. It had lived locally all of its life and was just a lovely lovely car.

It had its problems but none of the ones you read about. It just did the job very nicely.

It wasn't getting the use and sitting ouside it was beginning to show the early stages of neglec.

I knews its moods, it idiosyncracies, i loved the smell of it, the fact that if you hit the door in a certain way the annoying rattle would stop for a wee or two. The fact it seemd to drive better on summer evenings than during the day.

I still have dreams about it. That I am out in it having fun.

I really needed something a bit newer so bought the MX5 last year.

Sold the F on and didn't regret it until I saw it for sale again a few months later with the new owner saying somethign like "Its too good to break but its worth more as spares"

I do feel the same Chris. I can't actually put my finger on why I love the 850s/70s! This also applies to the first aluminium XJ...just feel 'right' in one!
