So my son turns 17 in October and is starting to look at cars, he has a budget of £5000. He is going to be a named driver so insurance won't be too much a problem. Doesn't want anything boy racer type. And he would also like a car with north of 120/bhp per ton.
Any help is welcome
Thanks

120BHP/ton for a 17yo ?

Don't know the weight of small cars but sounds too much to me confused

North of 120bhp per ton - good luck getting insured on anything for less than £3k.

If you mean hes going to be the main user of the car but the named driver on your policy thats fronting and I wouldn't really advise that lol, or admit it on PH of all places!

120bhp/ton seems an odd way to look for a car, includes all sorts of things.

120bhp/ton is a guide line as I don't want a car that he can't handle, nephew has a car with about the same bhp/ton and seems fine. I will be he main driver driving to work while he will use it occasionally.

MX-5. About the only insurable option with similar to that power to weight plus it's a cracking drive.

I'm sure at 17 though he's after a souped up shopping trolley that his mates can all pile into, you just need to convince that piling your mates in becomes tedious about a week after you pass and girls like 'girly' looking cars. Though I like the MX-5's looks.

This is why I don't often post too much on ph, I came on asking for suggestions of cars and get met by people asking things not relevant.

Nobody likes fronting, is all.

I shall explain, I will be the main driver of the car driving too and from work each day, he will drive it maybe a few times a week. Therefore I am the main driver.

Troll, in this thread http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... your son is turning 17 in May. JoJo97 are you a 15 year old dreamer?

Fronting is a waste of time, I had a policy in my name when I was 17 with my dad as a named driver (brought it down a chunk) and from then built up my no claims by the time I was 19 I could afford to insure a 205gti myself. I had friends that couldn't afford to drive cars they wanted in their early twenties because they had been "saving money" for years.

If £3k is ok for insurance, you can pick up a servicable MX5 or MR2 roadster for £2k (if you look hard enough). 133 bhp/tonne for the pair

Mk2 MR2 would probably fit the bill too, but I don't know the power/weight.

Also - don't ask advice for pistonheads. The default mentality is 'you are trying to pull the wool over my eyes...and I will bust you because I'm a genius'
