MY2013 McLaren MP4-12C - official details
More power and a raft of detail changes for latest version of MP4-12C
The power boost is the headline grabbing news of course but there's a lot more to it than that, the seven-speed SSG gearbox also updated for increased responsiveness (hurrah!) via revised control and clutch settings. The extra power also drops the 0-124mph sprint by a tenth of a second to 8.8secs, while the 0-186mph sprint is cut by a full second to 26.5secs.
Meanwhile the Intake Sound Generator, added in response to complaints of lack of drama under power, will gain driver selectable modes so you can tweak it to your own particular tastes - previously it was selectable as part of the three 'powertrain' modes.
Other changes include replacing the 'touch sensor' with a small button mounted on each door. "In line with customer feedback," says McLaren's press release, "this modification is intended to simplify the user experience." Which translates roughly as 'customers couldn't get the blasted system to work, the new button should reduce swearing...'
The headlights will now also automatically switch on when the car detects rain, the climate control system has been revised, and a speed hump-clearing vehicle lift function that raises the car by 40mm at the front and 25mm at the rear will be added as an option.
McLaren has added a swathe of new options, too, including Volcano Yellow paint, a new five-spoke forged alloy wheel design (available in various finishes), and a new higher-quality optional leather trim. Having seen the Volcano Yellow on our factory tour earlierin the year - and been sworn to secrecy on it - it's certainly an eye-catching option.
Of the changes, existing owners will get (as well as the 625hp power boost), the revised transmission, the programmable intake sound generator, the headlights linked to rain sensor when in automatic mode, Easy-Exit electric seat function incorporating Seat Return (if specified), and new Meridian audio equaliser settings (if specified).
The changes will come into effect from October, along with a price hike that brings the basic price of a 12C up from £168,500 to £176,000.
Lovely lovely car though! Congratulations for McLaren to have sold 1000 (ish) cars too. That's a healthy number of sales.
A magnificent thing.
This thread will probably get to several pages as the armchair haters and lovers break in, but I think this car transgresses all of that. Every thread breaks down into comparisons with other cars at the same price level.
I genuinely feel that although many see it as a competitor to a Ferrari 458, I do not. I do not think they approach things in the same way at all.
I would never, ever buy a 458 under any circumstances. But I hope to own a MP4 12C.
People either "get it", or they don't.
Make no odds, a mere 616bhp/hp/donkeys/gee-gee's or whatever would do me :-)
I'd love to be able to own one of these - give it a few years and I just might be tempted (when my ability to pay and the cost of them used meet somewhere in the middle).
Simes.

Both are mid engine 2 seat V8 supercars with around 600bhp and very similar performance and price built by F1 Teams, could they be any more similar
When you say some people don’t ‘get’ the MP4?
I don’t know what you mean here, you are possibly being a tad condescending to people who don’t really like it or prefer a 458 over it.
And it’s easy to ‘get’ - see above statement, you don’t have to be a certain type of sophisticated person to get the car
After getting a drive in an MP4-12C I now really like them. I remember reading tests and agreeing with the points they made – but after getting a proper look and drive in one I would disagree. It looks pretty dramatic [compared to most cars – maybe not a Lambo or 458 buts it’s still a wide, low, mid-engine supercar with cool doors! And looks nice in the metal with normal cars and not surrounded by other supercars then it might not stand out, but compared to 99.99% of cars on the road its stands out and looks dramatic!
Crazy fast and lovely noisy at full chat too.
Given the choice I don’t know if I would have one over a 458, it would be a close call but I wouldn’t make a ridiculous statement like:
"I would never, ever buy a 458 under any circumstances. But I hope to own a MP4 12C"
By this statement you are alluding that the Ferrari is rubbish or all its owner are knobs, that it’s tacky, or show-offy? But the MP4-12C is all the things the Ferrari is, only in a slightly different way.
Most owners of both of these cars would be knobs and show offs who know nothing about the car etc – I met one [MP4 owner – well, hadn’t collected the car yet] who thought it was 4WD! But not all of them are. And by owning a MP4-12C does this make you more sophisticated than someone owning a 458?
Most manufacturers have designed the air intake and inlet manifolds to produce certain harmonics for years. Even my first car, a 1.1 fiesta had an intake system designed to minimise noise.
It's just that they now manipulate the airflow with flaps to produce preferential induction noises at specific rev ranges, rather than muting them completely or living with unwanted noises and certain engine loads.
