I've had a very sad week, my beloved NSX that I've owned for 10 years went pop :-(. Looks like it needs a complete new engine!

If anyone has ever tried to get NSX parts from Honda you'll know how difficult/time consuming/pricey it is!

So it looks like I need to purchase a new set of wheels, I'm looking for something slightly more sensible I.e. 4 seats and a bigger boot. I've been looking at the Mercedes C32 AMG as it seems to fulfil all of the above but also very affordable to buy, my only worry is cost of ownership. Will it cost a fortune, how reliable are they and what should I look out for?

Any help you could give me would be great, does anyone on here own or have owned a C32 who could give me some first hand info?

Thanks everyone

Tom

I don't have any info that could help you, but what are you going to do with the NSX?

Surely with the NSX's appreciating like they are it would be prudent to cough up for a rebuild rather than move it on now?

I'd get a quote for a rebuild before considering any replacement.

This.

Get a full engine rebuild - guessing about 5k ish from this (http://www.scienceofspeed.com/products/engine_performance_products/NSX/ScienceofSpeed/custom_engine_program/factory_refresh/) though even if it's 10k, more than worth it for another 10 years of awesome motoring.

Keep the NSX. Or sell it to me, cheap.

Seriously though - I can imagine that being the sort of car where you'll always say you regret selling it and want another - by then they'll be megabucks, or it won't feel the same etc.

Keep it!

After an NSX, anything else is not going to seem the same. Keep it and fix it. Makes sense in the long run.

Hi Tom,

Could be worth contacting NSXCB.co.uk to enquire....Kaz is the master of rebuilding NSX engines.

Can you specify what actually happen when it went 'pop'?

There is an engine on ebay which I am sure you would have discovered but if it is a new head or engine parts you need then worth looking on the US site NSXPRIME.com.

If it was the harmonic balancer (crank pulley) that has eaten away the cover and cause cam belt failure...then you will need like new exhaust cams and new set of gaskets as the heads will need to come off......(probably £1K in parts assuming the heads are undamaged and the pistons are not injured!)...might as well have new water pump and crank pulley and belts while you are there.

if you can afford to run an NSX then think you'll be ok to run a C32 AMG

your NSX would be useful to someone who knows the NSX like the back of their balls

That makes no sense. I don't know the back of my balls very well at all. wink

Why on earth the NSX would be useful to my missus, I have no idea.

At present I don't know exactly what is wrong with my NSX as the garage haven't had a chance to drop the sump yet. But initial indications aren't good, when it cranks it sounds like part of the engine is trying to escape.

I really, really don't want to get rid of it, I just love it too much. But I don't have a lot of spare cash to buy something else while forking our for the repair bills except the likes of a C32 as their only 5k! But I can't afford to start spending 4 figure servicing bills on another car as well as the NSX, which is why I'm questioning reliability and likely issues on a C32 AMG.

I'm also open to other suggestions that people may have.

Cheers

Tom

p.s. Thanks for the heads up to the engine on ebay by the way :-).

I wouldn't bank on the C32 being the epitome of reliability either. Grass isn't greener, etc...

A friend of mine has one. Completely nurtured example with low mileage, easily one of the best examples about, fully looked after by MB. It's still lunched a cam pulley, two torque converters (thanks to the Valeo rad issue) and the supercharger front bearings failed. Lovely car, but pretty highly tuned.

If I was going down the route of rebuilding the engine or getting a new one, I'd run something really cheap and slow until the NSX was back on the road. It would be tough but that would make me determined to get the NSX running again!

Put a V8 in the NSX.

I'd get a rebuild for the NSX - as echoed above the car is slowly appreciating, and one with its original engine in good fettle will maintain its value well in future.

This!! Forget throwing thousands at a new set of wheels. Get a £1k snotter then sell it on once the NSX is fixed. 3 months of poverty spec motoring will be a small price to pay.
