So I was watching a bit of Top Gear and happened to hear the comment about why do poor people need to get where they are going quicker.

Now I just want to throw this out there in the open....Why are bus lanes actually bus lanes? Could they not be VIP lanes for people who wish to pay lets say £1500 a year to use these lanes?

It would work the same as bus lane cameras, the registration is linked to your VIP lane staus.

Whether it would actually work IRL or not I don't know, but on the face of it, it doesn't sound like the most ridiculous thing does it....?

That wouldn't buy as many votes.

Moscow already has VIP lanes I think, no doubt the wealthy Russians in London would appreciate the idea here too.

It could lead to anarchy on the streets.

There's already one, the M6 toll wink Fortunately it appears to be a financial disaster, so hopefully it won't be repeated.

Well I would imagine they would stay with the other cars.

I think it's more of an issue in London where this would not work. But somewhere oop North, I think this theory would actually work.

It is a misconception that public transport is for poor people. Bus lanes are an attempt to make bus travel quicker and more efficient than travelling by car in an effort to get less people using their cars. Hasn't worked so well though, sadly. On Britain's crowded, narrow roads, bus lanes are a bit of a half-arsed attempt.

Bus lanes may make the bus journey quicker than if there weren't bus lanes but it's not quicker than in a car. Going by bus is for those who have more time available or no alternative.

As posted may not be poor people, could be disqualified drivers. frown

In crowded cities like London I can see the point of bus lanes but in so many places they are underused and cause congestion. The bus lanes usually reduce the number of lanes available to ordinary traffic thus resulting in extended queues that may block the previous junction thus causing more congestion.
Quite often I regularly see bus lanes but not a bus in sight. For 20+ years I've driven the Kidlington to Oxford road and a couple of months ago was the first time I saw a bus in the bus lane on that road.

I would suggest that there should be a bus using a bus lane every 3 minutes. If longer then there is not the demand for a bus lane and it should be made available for all traffic to ease congestion. As we know congestion costs everybody money.

I can never see the point in an empty bus lane and a queue of traffic that could be half of the length if the bus lane was scrapped. Or the fanatical enforcement, eg make you wait right to the end before crossing it, even if it would save you 10 minutes of queuing. It's our road and we're being robbed of it so peasants can hop on a bus and think they own a bit of the road that they haven't actually paid for. Why are we subsidising buses out of the taxes we pay as car drivers?

There is one in MK that only applies morning and evening rush hours but everyone insists on driving outside of it all day and take exception to you using it (including the police I might add). Then they cut across it to turn left from the right hand lane without looking

In all the years it's been there I have seen a total of one bus in it.

It's a stick to force you out of your car and onto a bus.

Can you imagine the looks of hatred and vitriol that would be directed towards these exalted beings who've paid for the privilege of driving in bus lanes? And I can't see many 'regular' motorists being in a hurry to let them joint the normal road when the bus lane ends either.

Just get on a Eurotunnel shuttle and watch and laugh as those people who paid for 'flexi' or 'first class' or something find themselves trying to politely get fed into the front of a massive queue just before the train

Bus lanes - i have no fvcking idea when or where i'm allowed to drive in one, so 9 times out of 10 i just avoid them completely.

that's a good point actually; instead of having a confusing sign it wouldn't be hard to have a red cross or a green tick connected either to a central system or a simple time keeping device.

You won't have noticed the big, blue signs at the start of each section, then? rolleyes

(And please curb the language - the swear filter is not there to be circumnavigated).

Just read the signs they put up at the start of the bus lane.
