My 730d 2008 in for an oil change, just had a call from the dealership,

"Sir the front parking light bulb needs changing,is it ok to do that ?"
How much ? Expecting him to reply a fiver sir !
That will be approx £140 plus vat !!!!

Apparently they need to take off the front bumper to replace the bulb and that will be an hour job.

Lolololololol

No it's not ok

Not good - does the bumper really have to come off?

That's a bit harsh. I've got a 2007 3 series and they provide a little access door on the wheelarch liner. You turn the handle, open the door and can then just change the bulb there and then. If like me you've got slim hands and arms you don't even need to jack the car up.

if that is genuinely the case (that the bumper needs to come off), i can't see what the problem is.

you are running a fairly recent 7-series which you are putting through main-stealer servicing at their widely publicised labour rates (they have to pay for their flash dealerships, complimentary posh coffees and £150k per annum salaries for service managers somehow).

the fact that they can get the bumper off, fit a new bulb and then get it refitted within within an hour is commendable.

It's not that funny, you're still going to have to get the bulb replaced somewhere! Hopefully you'll pay less than £140, but in modern cars changing bulbs is not the trivial task it used to be on older models, with many newer vehicles requiring disassembly to the bumper, grille, wheel arch splash shields etc to gain access.

I don't know the answer to that Matt, does anyone else know ?

Anyway update....

An hour later dealership calls me to say as a special deal he will charge just £35 to replace the bulb,is that ok sir ?

Errr no , thank you for knocking off 75 percent but my mate is going to do it tomorrow and I'm buying him a beer for his troubles.

Ok sir I'll find a way to knock off £35 from the oil change !!!!

Any thoughts anyone ?

Apparently you need to remove the bumper to change the headlight bulb in a Mazda 6.

I managed it the first time by removing the wheel arch liner so I could see what i had to do and now I can do it just from an open bonnet.

Over the last year every time we've had a company vehicle serviced the initial quote for things they find has fell by between 50 & 75% following us saying no or telling them we will get back to them.

Steady on! Things will have to get pretty bad to knock estate agents and parking wardens off the top spot.

I don't know about the bmw specifically, but I do know that in general, lots if new cars need silly amounts if work to change bulbs.

A chap I used to work with had a small merc, he'd owned it for three weeks and the bulb blew.
He got a new bulb from halfords and couldn't fit it.
Eventualy he went to the dealers feeling embarrassed and asked if someone could show him.
The answer:
Yes sir, it's a £200 job. Car up, wheel off, wheel liner out, other stuff out, change bulb, put it all back.

- Can you do it free as it's new?
- No sir, sorry sir.

My mate got the salesman down, reminded the salesman about the 'we guarantee you'll love you mercedes' 1 month no quible return policy.
Took his stuff out of the car and gave the car back there and then.

Cool Story etc..
But, expensive lightbulb changed are quite common.

Maybe I’m just extra cynical, but maybe they haven’t done it?

Maybe it didn’t need done, they fancied charging him for it, and are now back-pedalling because when he comes to pick up his car with its blown bulb, he’ll notice there’s actually nothing wrong with it, and know that they were trying it on.

So now they want to do it extra cheap/free, so he doesn’t realise?
I think you're cynical... but you may be correct.
