Cant find an insurer!!!! My Dad is Non-Uk Resident
Discussion
Hey All!
We have bought a stunning Dax Cobra kit car.. currently insured with Performace Direct and with my Husband and I as the drivers on the policy.
the car was purchased as a bit of a 'treat' for my dad to drive when he comes over from Spain… and having done the GRAND REVEAL 2 days ago.. I now need to get him insured!
Trouble is… Performance Direct only use Brokers who stipulate you must be UK resident.. and my Dad isn't.
The main policy holders will be me and my husband.. with my dad only driving it for a few days at a time when he visits.
What should I do???
He has an EU driving licence. He is a UK Citizen… but not a UK Reisdent. He lives in Spain
ANyone got any ideas as to where to start?
I'm guessing we would have to then cancel our current policy with PD.. and then take out a new one.. since I have also heard you cannot insure a vehicle TWICE????
Thanks
Natasha

this is a real and genuine problem.
AXA provide a policy either through Stuart Collins - but only cover standard unmodified cars. doubt Dax would fit.
i once got a quote for a Caterham from:

Caterham is technically a kit car, so you might be ok with RKH

Can't you insure it so that anyone can drive it, rather than just named drivers?
And/Or -
Surely the question of residency only comes into it when trying to get a complete new policy in the name of the non resident?
Otherwise it would mean that only UK residents could ever drive cars in the UK.

Will be watching this thread with interest. Having my non-UK resident in-laws insured to drive one of our cars for a few months each year is an annual issue. We always resort to just getting a hire car for the period, as it works out cheaper than what any insurers are prepared to quote.
Google is your friend. I found this in about 10 seconds. I don't know anything about them, but see the 'expats' section.

Suspect there are stacks of companies that do this. Your situation is hardly unique.

I think my challenge is two-fold
1) we need a named driver who is not UK resident
2) it is a 1970 classic/kit car
Surely I can't be the only or the first?????
I have a multi-vehicle policy with Footman James, some classics, some modern cars on the policy. They were happy to extend cover to my Australian friend when she visited and borrowed a car for a couple of weeks a few years ago. I don't recall what they charged, but it wasn't a lot and was certainly cheaper than a hire car.1) we need a named driver who is not UK resident

I find all this odd? my son has lived abroad and pays income tax abroad for the last 20 years,I`ve had no problem getting temporary cover for him to drive any of my vehicles for SDP (not business).I have a motor traders policy with AXA and just call my broker with the dates of his visit,I think it cost about £50-£100.
Mind you he has a UK Pass Port and driving license and is on the UK electoral role at my address.

Dear TogThank you for your input. I have called FJ three times...
1st time: girl said adamantly NO they would not allow a non-UK resident to be insured as a named driver
2nd time: another girl said yes.. they WOULD insure my Dad as a non-UK resident but only on policies underwritten by Ageas. She said someone would call me back. They didn't
3rd time: told indefinitely NO they would NOT insure any non-UK resident
I told each girl of your 'tale' and that you HAD got cover for an Australian visitor... and they said it couldn't be true!!!!
FFS
I am still no further down the line and I still cannot get cover for my poor dad! He only wants to drive it for a few days each year!!!! Said it was one of the things he wanted to drive again before he died!!!!!!! (not that he is ill.. he isn't!!!)
Towergate DONT do tailor-made policies
Stuart Collins DONT insure unusual cars
TEMP cover or One Day Insure: DONT insure classic or kit cars
What the hell do I do????? It means he can't ever drive it on UK roads.. unless he chooses to completely break the law!!!!
Its not fair!
