I was going to agree on CVH ,then remembered I was a serial owner of the things.
8 I believe in Escort MK3 and Fiesta MK3s
It was the first engine that came to my mind too but I remember owning 4 of the things, 3 Escort (2 x mk3, 1 x mk4) and a Fiesta. Actually technically I owed 5 after I swapped the 1.3 for a 1.6 in one of the Escorts!8 I believe in Escort MK3 and Fiesta MK3s
Hard to think of a worse production engine in recent memory than the CVH in all honesty. Worked well with a turbo strapped to it, and was just about acceptable in something really light where you didn't need to work it, but I still associate the 1.4 in a mk5 Escort as the nastiest, most miserable powertrain it has been my misfortune to encounter. Gutless unless thrashed, when it was slightly less gutless, but sounded like it was in agony, and set up a horrible high frequency buzz that caused the interior fittings to vibrate even in a 2,000 mile old car. Also the one I had over a weekend did 26 mpg! Utter crap.

We had a Talbot Alpine.
Engine really rattled like a bag of spanners.
Not just our one, but they all did !

+1 I had one of these too before the Escort. My first car was a 1.3 Talbot Horizon with the same engine as the Alpine. Coarse, rattly and gutless.Engine really rattled like a bag of spanners.

It's because of these monstrous things that I now have a supercharged V8!

Vauxhall V6 as fitted to the Omegas etc worth a dishonourable mention.
Leaky rocker box covers, seizing oil filter brackets, plastic tensioners prone to breaking, oil prone to mixing with coolant. Apart from putting out reasonable power and being smooth, if you had a bad one ( as I did ) they're a nightmare.
