RE: £100k Garage: Alex March
Saturday 10th October 2015
Name: Alex March
Previously owned: Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk2, BMW E30 325i Sport convertible, BMW E36 328i Sport, MG Midget, BMW E46 M3, Audi A4 1.9TDI Avant, Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk5, Porsche Boxster S (986)
Currently owned: Audi B6 S4 Avant and a 50 per cent stake in a BMW E36 328i Sport track day car with a friend
On the shortlist: "BMW 650i, BMW 335i, Volkswagen Golf R32, Audi S3... or if I can justify it to myself a BMW E92 M3 or Mercedes C63 AMG Estate"
Cost: £71,950
Balance: £28,050
Why I chose it: "I want to keep my garage to just two cars, and don't want to spread the £100K too thinly. I don't really need a daily driver, and could keep my Audi S4 for load lugging, tip runs and so on. This would be my toy. I've loved 911s ever since my godfather took me out in his when I was a kid. I can't think of much better than taking this out on the weekend for a blast along some great roads. I could also use it for the occasional track day if I wanted. It is also something I could keep forever, as I think it will age very well. I particularly love this colour combination."
Cost: £25,990
Balance: £2,060
Why I chose it: "This would be my comfortable cruiser. I just love these, and have done for as long as I can remember. I think this is a particularly good colour combination. It would be perfect for weekends away or road trips. Engine noise is a really important factor for me, and these sound fantastic, even when you're just pottering around or in traffic. For me, a perfect complement to the GT3."

Just two cars for Alex, but they're two pretty damn good ones!

Discussion
I'm sure there will be plenty of people waiting to comment on the choice of a 'jumped up VW beetle' etc...
For me, spending the majority of the pot on a proper drivers Porsche makes a lot of sense.
I also love the Quattroporte - The pre-facelift model in dark red with beige hide is one of the best looking vehicles I've seen in the flesh.
Cheap now too.

Hmm the porsche is just a badge and look, be decent drive but not for 70k ffs, the Maserati looks terrible and will be a moneypit. If he wants a fun sports car and a practical daily and nothing interesting then why not...

Why would you spend 5K when you've got 100k? Theoretically.

Well if he feels the need to spend then he could get lots of infinitely more attractive cars than the one he quotes with the change...Why would you spend 5K when you've got 100k? Theoretically.
Ones that are revered and won't lose money and will have so much more soul than his "latest badge" car selection...
I fancy eg a S3 Turbo Esprit or a 348/355 for that kind of a car. I even have a penchant for the 840/50 Beemer which seems to be steady now. A new Porsche, nah... A new MASERATI? I don't understand at all

Each to their own of course and I must say that 911's don't really do it for me either but............Ones that are revered and won't lose money and will have so much more soul than his "latest badge" car selection...

It isn't a new Porsche or Mazzer he has chosen for starters. If losing money is the b all and end all then perhaps you've missed the point of the theoretical 100K garage. As for being a money pit then goodness me why would you want an Esprit or have to service a Fezza? Don't get me wrong, nice choices, lovely cars but don't contradict yourself. As for a 840/850 beemer........and you think the Quattroporte looks gash...........

The GT3 is obviously a good pick however the Quattroporte does nothing for me; I'd swap it for a mint B7 RS4 Avant.
Hmmmm, interesting and weird. Porsche 911, Audi RS4, you seem to like your "engines" in all the wrong places, up front, in the rear. Well MrBarry, I came across this in the Urbandictionary:http://nl.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=a+Ba...
"a Barry
while performing Anal sex with your partner you proceed to donkey punch them and while unconscious you give them an arabian mask take pictures and Set it as there default social networking site of choice picture.
Last week I gave Jane a Barry and she hasnt talked to me since."
Strange world.
Personally I think the Quattroporte is a fabulous choice.
They're both fantastic choices.
I'd take the 911 with maybe a BMW E61 M5 to take the dog along too!

Just a thought!

Nice pair of cars. Far more sensible and realistic than a huge number of sheds that you would not touch with a barge pole if it were a real 100k, although I'm not sure keeping your current car is really in the spirit, although you could get a cheap Audi shed with the money haggled off the other two or by buying slightly cheaper ones.
