Tesla P100D 0-60 in 2.5s
Discussion
"The Model S P100D with Ludicrous mode is the third fastest accelerating production car ever produced, with a 0-60 mph time of 2.5* seconds"
How quick can these get?
Oh 315 mile range also...

Whats the point? It must be getting to the stage that normal road tyres can't cope any more.
Maybe they should concentrate on improving range and build quality rather than these daft 0-60 times. $135k is a lot of money for a one trick pony.

In answer to the "how quick can these get" surely tyres are now the limiting factor!
Pretty awesome achievement though, i would love to have a go in one of these for a few days, see what they are like to live with
This, from teslas own press release, is refreshingly honest and upfront too

While the P100D Ludicrous is obviously an expensive vehicle, we want to emphasize that every sale helps pay for the smaller and much more affordable Tesla Model 3 that is in development. Without customers willing to buy the expensive Model S and X, we would be unable to fund the smaller, more affordable Model 3 development.

Nope, it's not mumsnet.
I just can't see the point of Tesla constantly chasing improvements in 0-60 times.
I don't see that they are chasing them, but they happen to be a byproduct of putting that much "electric" performance in a 4wd car... If you were a VERY new car manufacturer, blazing a trail with new technology which happened to give you a MASSIVE advantage in one of the oldest and most easily understood performance metrics, do you not think you would use that to your advantage re: marketing etc?I just can't see the point of Tesla constantly chasing improvements in 0-60 times.

Because they are in business of selling expensive cars with new technology. Performance figures like that create publicity, publicity sells cars. To sell an expensive car like this you need to attract a certain type of customer, a 400 mile range doesn't impress the type of customer they are looking for but being faster than a Ferrari does. People create videos of the car going fast, nobody creates them driving for 100's of miles perfectly normally.I just can't see the point of Tesla constantly chasing improvements in 0-60 times.

Just checking.. Are you sure this is the right forum for you?
I'm more worried you had to check the URL to make sure you hadn't gone to mumsnet Rob. Is it your other favourite site? :rolf:Jokes aside, I can see it sells cars and people like bragging about 0-60 times. I'm just a luddite and can't see the appeal of doing it in a car like that. Much rather have a V8 soundtrack and a danger of being spun off into the nearest hedge All seems a bit clinical and easy.
I eagerly await the sub 2 second 0-60 though that will inevitably come.

Tesla making a profit yet?
Was it not the case that McLaren and Bugatti lost money on the F1 and Veyron respectively. Both game changing cars. Whilst the Tesla is not going to have quite the same legendary status as the F1, the S has proven to be a game changing car in my opinion. Germans definitely playing catch up and and will no doubt develop some very impressive electric cars to mimic the Tesla architecture, e.g. Porsche Mission-E.Maybe they never intended to make a profit on the S but are in in for the long game, such as mass production of the Model 3, selling battery packs to others, licensing deals, etc.
