London Emmisions Surcharge - 'The Banger Tax'
Discussion
Apologies if theres a thread somewhere else - I couldn't find one with the search. Theres some good info on the upcoming banger tax in London:

And a link to where you can enquire if your vehicle meets the standards or not

It's not that bad, like most Londoners I'm pretty much unaffected by the congestion zone during the week.
how lovely...put in the details of my classic range rover:

After 23 October 2017, you have the following options:
Walk, cycle or use public transport - visit our Journey Planner tool
Upgrade your vehicle. In this case, you'll also need to check the forthcoming tighter ULEZ standards
Pay the daily charge
Join a car club - all car club vehicles meet the emission standard. Find out more about car clubs
Lease a vehicle that meets the required emission standard
a bit of hassle to walk from the Cotswolds on the half dozen times a year I go into the cityWalk, cycle or use public transport - visit our Journey Planner tool

I guess the message is to buy a new car... but ironically that is more environmentally damaging to build a new car than to run an older one longer...

The T-Charge is a vital step in tackling the dirtiest diesels before I introduce the world’s first Ultra Low Emission Zone as early as 2019."
yet my car is not a diesel...so, how it is tackling the dirtiest diesel I do not know!
equally my other cars are classics so will no longer meet requirements...
As they won't then meet the ULEZ either - at that point basically London has said don't bother coming in any longer...
So that is one charity I am involved with which I can no longer visit...
should save me lots of money every year...!!!

Hidden away in the site it states that cars that are 40 years old or older are exempt, which is nice.
Not one of my cars is exempt, which means if we go into london we will take my wifes X5, which is a diesel suv. Exactly the kind of car they are trying to discourage
Good thinking there.

I think I'm going to be caught up in this and can't afford to change!
I commute from Beckenham - Moorgate on a 2003 CBR600F which I suspect won't meet the conditions. This bike cost £1k, I have no Idea how I am meant to find another comparable bike that does (and won't be a total thief magnet) for a similar amount
fking ridiculous. Only out is if it works on congestion charge times, I'm at my desk before 7am and often leaving after 6pm so should be ok...worst case I come/go early and the bike's having the plate attached with velcro for easy removal replacement if before the times

You can buy a V5 and bent euro 3/4 chassis for £100, Insure it for buttons and put its number plate on the CBR. Do you really think the 'I used to ride a Fireblade' cops would be able to tell the difference? Pop the CBR plates back on outside the city to minimise risk. Doesn't look like you'll be affected until they introduce the ULEZ in 2020, so no need to moan (yet).I commute from Beckenham - Moorgate on a 2003 CBR600F which I suspect won't meet the conditions. Quite a lot... so charging to drive in before 6pm, but not after 6pm?
How does it make London less polluted based on the time I arrive
Where does the majority of pollution come from - my private car coming in 6 times a year, or...?
When you come from 90 miles away for evening events and need to return that evening after public transport has stopped - exactly how would you suggest that someone gets into and out of London? I am sure that I will be much fitter walking 180 miles each time - great suggestion...
The big picture is great - but using a hammer to smash the small situations as well is not so good - i.e. a bit more thinking might be needed - it is going to cost c. £35 with CC / this and ULEZ - yes it will be a deterrent from spending all year commuting into London in an inappropriate car - but for those who come in very occasionally it will basically stop those visits...

The news articles seem to suggest it affects cars but TFL's website says all vehicles?
'Twas forecast in the other Diesel thread. The Guardinistas are having a field day with it; 'ban ALL cars, make people walk, no-one needs a car in London, average car journey is only 2 Km so get the damn bus' etc. The same people who boil at the merest hint of fake news.
The one glimmer is that the T Charge, and the C charge don't (yet) apply on Sundays, so we can all go and pollute as we like then. Won't help the commuters on here. Most bikes seem exempt, including two-stroke tuk-tuks, banned from many other cities. So the T charge looks more like a penalty tax than an air-improvement measure.
There's a lot of peer-reviewed evidence that the current batch of T&C charge-exempt London taxis are also stink-weeds. No surprise, but the full facts are here:
