£300 to cover insurance on loan car whilst mine's repaired?
Discussion
This week marks the fifth week my car's been sat at a main dealer with a gearbox issue - it was dropped in on July 24th and I've not seen it since. The car's a year old and under warranty. It was initially diagnosed as an issue with the synchro in 3rd and 4th. A long story short is the gearbox has been and out of the car multiple times in the past 5 weeks with various replacement parts being fitted but the fault remains.
The dealer blame 'Peugeot Technical' who advise on how to repair and what to replace. The 'wrong parts' have been continually sent and dealer's had to resort to sending pictures of the broken parts next to the new ones in order to prove the parts they're advising need fitting simply aren't meant for the gearbox. Even when the correct ones arrive and get fitted the fault remains.
Now that we're 5 weeks on they've given up with trying to repair and are replacing the gearbox itself.
I've been provided with a replacement car from Enterprise and cover the cost of up to £25 a day costs. The main dealer have paid for the car but don't cover the insurance which is £10 a day which I have to cover. What I'm amazed at is that I can rent the same car for £20 a day from Enterprise and this includes insurance.
Anyhow, I've been in touch with Peugeot Customer Care. Their response, by email, is pretty concise; we don't have to offer you a replacement car, the replacement car in itself is a goodwill gesture and insurance is your problem. They will not be paying towards my insurance despite the delays in getting and fitting the right parts being down to them. The dealer doesn't deny this and agrees this is the reason the repair has been so prolonged.
So far my insurance costs are £300 and rising.
Am I being unreasonable here in wanting Peugeot to cover them?
And as far as Enterprise go I'm amazed they rent cars to Peugeot without insurance included. I think the £10 is the rip off optional enhanced insurance cost. Tempted to pay on Mastercard and immediately dispute the payment.

if you have been provided the car by enterprise on behalf of peugeot, are you picking up the whole bill and claiming back from peugeot? or are peugeot paying the £25 direct to enterprise and you are paying the optional £10 per day (i assume reducing the excess to £0 etc) your self?
if its the former then upon realising you could rent the same car for £20, why not give your £25+ per day car back and just start a new agreement at £20? at least that limits your additional costs (before you dispute them) to those sustained so far.

Spoke to them earlier. They're invoicing Peugeot for the £25 a day rental, and the insurance is separately for the insurance.
I've had a look on the rental document and the insruance is classified as 'optional protection accepted'.
The rental agreement is exactly the same as any other I've had privately with enterprise and insurance has always been included.
The dealer has specified to Enterprise they don't cover the cost of insurance. Enterprise have jumped on this, by the looks of things, to slap on the optional protection under the pretence the car wouldn't have been inusred otherwise.

Coincidentally my car was repaired and returned today.
I spoke to Enterprise to let them know I was done with their car. They asked I drop it off at the dealer for them to collect tomorrow. I asked whether I had anything outstanding to pay and they confirmed more than once there was nothing. The rental was organised by Peugeot themselves. The rental agreement also shows the dealer as being the invoicee. Looks like they're copping for the lot.
The dealer asked how I'd settled my £10 a day insurance costs from the total invoice. They'd be charging my card directly, I said.
I've also manage to lose my debit card they took a £1 pre-authorisation from when they handed me the car so it's now cancelled.

Get an annual rental car insurance excess policy from a 3rd party specialist for about £50
May I ask if you have any recommendations?A good friend of mine flies and hires in Scotland quite regularly, so if I can save her some money on CDW and all that extra cost, that would be ace.

Your cars insurance policy covers courtesy cars when your is in the garage doesn't it? Would this not count as that, even if the car has come from a hire company and not the garage direct?
No - I think that is only valid whilst the car is in for work related to the insurance - IE a loan car provided after an accident?numtumfutunch said:

My wifes Jag has been at the dealers since Monday for a raft of warranty repairs. Initially there was talk of a charge for loan car insurance, but that seems to have disappeared after we protested. I certainly wouldn't entertain paying for insurance for any car whilst warranty work was being carried out especially for the time you're has taken.
Sounds like the money you paid was just an additional excess reduction.
I would have insisted a courtesy car provided by the dealer at no extra cost to yourself.
i remember my dad had a Lexus is220d which needed a new engine under warranty
they paid for any car of his choice from enterprise with full insurance excess

My experience has always been that the cars have been insurered, but with a large excess (typically a grand) and they want £10-£15 off you to waive the excess. As others suggested, some motor policies cover you anyway - mine with LV does, and Aviva include it. However that's for garage courtesy cars - I don't know if a car they'd hired would be the same.

They insure you to drive a car which you're not currently driving so it makes sense that they could be willing to cover a similar car during that period.
When renting a car from Enterprise the car comes with insurance by default.
The person from Peugeot who sorted the rental has explained to Enterprise they were only willing to pay for the rental and not the insurance. She didn't stop to think that it's not actually an option to rent a car from them which doesn't actually include insurance.
Enterprise have rubbed their hands together and told me I needed to pay £10 to insurance. Having read the hire agreement this is for some sort of excess waiver. Can't quite remember the terminology.
Enterprise have just called now to ask me when I'm dropping the car off this evening despite me calling them yesterday to tell them it's at Peugeot. I made it clear Peugeot are picking up the bill for that lot.
Debit card the pre-authorisation was taken from is now cancelled so nothing can be taken.
I was reluctant to approach my insurers about getting cover for the car as I know what hire companies can be like when returning a care with alleged damage. I didn't want me no claims messed up.
Also didn't expect it to take 5 weeks to sort out a f*cking gearbox either!

No - Aviva cover "any vehicle loaned to the vehicle policyholder for a maximum of seven days from a garage, motor engineer or vehicle repairer whilethe vehicle registration described above is being either serviced, repaired or having a MOT test."
The LV is the same but without a time limit.thenortherner said:

Be careful there - business to business car hire (which this is, between Enterprise and the dealer) can be done without insurance - we used to do it, and our fleet policy covered the car.The person from Peugeot who sorted the rental has explained to Enterprise they were only willing to pay for the rental and not the insurance.
