You know those car's that always have a bit of trim falling off or gauges that stop working badly fitting doors boot etc.

Had an mgf for a few months from november till start if this month was fine when i got it but after using it like it should be used it just gradually fell to bits and got scrapped.

If i'm honest i started driving in 1996, in a 1992 fiesta and moved on from there, i've never had a car that i considered badly built.

Surprisingly, my Honda Civic Type R FN2. Interior trim seemed to fall off at will, the boot lid sounded like it would shatter into pieces whenever it was closed, the roof started to rust where it joined the windscreen, the Sat Nav unit died and had to be sent off to Alpine for repair, the front subframe developed the common clonk, the clutch pedal creaked.... it was sh*t.

My Racing Puma wasn't brilliant either, but as a some of it was built by hand, I can forgive it.

I think mine must have been a Friday car, but I'm just glad it came from a main dealer, and despite being used had a smidgen of warranty left. Incidentally my Clio 182 of a few cars previous had no problems at all. Weird.

I can see this being an Italian car thread biggrin but as I've owned nothing but Italian cars I will say my first car, a Mk1 Fiat Strada 65CL and my recently sold Coupe 20VT. The Coupe is one of those cars where it all depends who built it as my mate has one which doesn't make a sound inside.

The Grande Punto I had wasn't great despite being the newest car I owned. The Lancia Thema I owned before the Punto was extremely well built and the only sound was from the creaking leather.

Predictably, a 1995 Range Rover Classic!

That said, at least it did feel solid (up until the point that something fell off - heck, it usually even fell off with a nice solid 'thump'). In contrast, my Mazda MX-6 had the cheapest, nastiest, flimsiest, thinnest plastics I've ever encountered, but they never squeaked, rattled or broke, which really used to irritate me, for some reason!

I didn't own it, but my mother's ghastly Marina was by a country mile the worst put together car I've ever seen.

Even by seventies ?Longbridge standards, it was a Friday afternoon special.

Citroen BX GTI 16V

Fantastic car - fast with good cornering. But the hydraulic issues renders the car practically useless.

My ex's Fiat 500 deserves a mention simply for the sheer number of door handles it got through.

Had a 2006 Renault Scenic. Horrendous thing and I’m ashamed to admit I owned one. Glass fell into the door and hands were cut to shreds trying to retrieve them. Roof lining started to collapse. Interior lights fell out and would dangle by their wires. Electric window buttons collapsed into their surround. Electric dash would flicker but never actually needed replacing. The middle arm rest could be moved back and forth but got stuck in the rear position so too far back to use when driving. Screw heads showing everywhere, general fit and finish was terrible. Puddles of water in the rear storage. Parcel shelf made from thin card. Stereo would only work from the left despite what the balance and fader said on the dash. Vile thing.

I've not owned masses of cars but in all honesty, it's my 2006 BMW 3 series. Generally the trim and fittings are quality and feel great, but there's so many poor/cheap design issues, plastic water pumps etc that are just shocking. Definitely a car that was built for the first couple owners/warranty period. Lovely car like but really disappointed.

My MG ZR had the usual fun Rover attributes but was generally okay for a cheap/first car. The glove box would sometimes unlatch and open randomly & the sunroof leaked when it was light rain/mist, but never in heavy rain!

Rover 100 which was my first car, owned it from new to 5 years old. Every service it had issues that needed fixing, never passed an MOT first time while I owned it.

Last MOT/service bill was £500 if I remember (in 2002!), got rid of it after that.

Alfa Brera V6 Q4

Looked awesome but was utterly awful

Random alarms at all times of day and night, drivers seat like a rocking chair, soaking wet footwell because the chap on the line forgot to fit the inner door membrane and worst of all a fuel tank that was impossible to fill after the RHD conversion.

A massive disappointment frown

I had a couple of classic Mini's and the engine was like something from the 50's at best. I did a pretty heavy tune on it which just went to highlight that the crank was made from cheese. The thing then rotted away.

The Sud, Sprint and 33 that followed were mechanically fine in terms of the drivetrains but lots of other moving parts failed regularly - indicator switches, horn switches, heater fans, wiper assemblies, that sort of thing. And the Sprint did start to rust towards the end.

In more recent years I had one of "those" Mercs where the paint wasn't stuck to the shell and caused lots of corrosion - or at least It would have done for someone as I got shot of it sharpish.

Predictably a 2017 Range Rover, electric seat has never worked properly, touch screen works when it feels like it, then the engine seized at 52,000 miles.

I had a series 1 Jaguar S type w reg.

Lovely comfortable, fast well handling car albeit with a tiny boot.

I called it my "clowns car" as once it reached 65k everything started falling apart.

I've had some horrors but this was the worst.

Cheer,

Tony

Longbridge had nothing to do with it. It was built at the Cowley plant that makes Mini now

My worst built car by a country mile was an E30 BMW 318iS. Felt solid and reassuringly high quality. It wasn't until I had owned it awhile that I realised the quality to be skin deep. Random engine managemnt issues, rough running, chasing coolant leaks from a miriad of porous hoses, synchro failing. All at 3 years old and with 45k miles on the clock. One previous owner. Looked nice though.

I suspect there must have been something amiss/Friday car but it was shockingly unreliable - always needing something looking at/replacing. It has cured me of aspiring to BMWs so far...

Best built cars have been unfailingly Japanese. Dont have the quiality/heft/weight to the engineering but they just work.

Bang on analysis. I had a 20vt and it almost felt Germanic. No bangs, no rattles, yes it needed preventative maintenance but maybe longest I've kept a car
